Out of 32 NFL Teams, Dallas is ranked 2nd in the NFL in 4th QTR QB Rating with a 107.7 rating. Does this surprise anyone at all? Our QB does have the highest 4th QTR Rating in NFL history, so it shouldn't come as a shocker that he's being clutch this year as well.

Tony Romo 2013 stats by each QTR

1st QTR /// 62.8 CMP% /// 619 YDS /// 7.2 YPA //// 3 TD /// 2 INT /// 86.3 QBR
2nd QTR /// 65.2 CMP% /// 753 YDS /// 6.5 YPA /// 5 TD /// 2 INT /// 91.6 QBR
3rd QTR /// 58.8 CMP% /// 717 YDS /// 7.0 YPA /// 8 TD /// 1 INT /// 102.5 QBR
4th QTR /// 69.5 CMP% /// 826 YDS /// 7.9 YPA /// 7 TD /// 2 INT /// 107.1 QBR
4th QTR within 7 /// 68.4 CMP% /// 682 YDS /// 8.6 YPA /// 6 TD /// 2 INT /// 109.8 QBR

See the trend here? As the game progresses and it becomes crunch time, Romo gets better and better. Why can't the whole length of the game be played in the 4th QTR? That would make me feel so much better about our playoff chances.

For the people here who doesn't believe he's "clutch" or doesn't have the it factor, answer this. How can someone NOT be clutch, yet have the highest 4th QTR QBR in NFL history and also have the most GWDs since 2011? Talk about a contradiction.

Also, if you want a good laugh check out the 31st ranked team on the list, poor Eli. :D

But, but...he bobbled a snap several years ago. He also is the only QB to throw an ill-timed interception and has always had a top 5 defense. He is a choker

See. This is what I was talking about as far as bringing something new to the table.

I think the trend has something do to with play calling. Probably more conservative in the first 3 quarters.

Tony mentions in his pressers from time to time--and he did again on Sunday night--that they take some time sorting out what the defense is planning on doing that day before adjusting to it. That's not really news, but I think that's a big part of what goes on early. They keep the players in the same positions for the most part, diagnose what the defense wants to do with rolling coverages v. which routes, and then figure out the adjustments that are going to work best as a result. Contrary to what's floated every now and then, they're actually fairly effective as a group in sorting out the passing game adjustments over time. Though some might believe they start throwing the playbook out at halftime and finally finish sometime in the 4th quarter after they pull within seven.

What I would really like to see is our pass rating when we go without a huddle. I can't find it anywhere. I tried figuring it out from the official gamebooks, but the NFL is inconsistent in the way those are kept. Sometimes there are whole games without any no-huddle snaps listed. In the San Diego game, for example, just looking at the game video, I count 11 of 13 for 93 yards in no-huddle, but the gamebook doesn't show any of this.

The short of it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Romo's completion percentage wasn't somewhere around 80% with a rating near 120 in these situations.

Agreed, though Tony just overall being more protective with the ball plays a role. And it seems like all the miscues that lead to INTs are happening early, rather than late, this year as well.

I would point out that this post was about passer rating and not QBR. QBR is espn's gimmick stat and is terrible.

Other then that good post.

If only we could build a defense that could shut down the run and consistently force 3rd and longs like many of those other qb's have had.

Then we could make some damage, with the kicker we have and the punt returner we would be right n the mix.

But since they can not figure out how to build and play good defense we keep missing the playoffs.

Bill parcells, mike Zimmer, Brian Stewart, wade Phillips, Paul pasqualoni, rob Ryan and now monte Kiffin have run poor defenses out for years and the Rest of the team has been dragged down by it.

Meanwhile Todd Bowles has stepped right In and done a great job in Arizona yet we didn't hire him after having two opportunities to do so.

He's thrown more INTS than TDS in his career while in the 1st QTR? Ouch, at least he's getting them out early. Also, do you think that trend could be attributed to him just getting 'warmed up' ? I know it sounds silly, but from playing Baseball the majority of my life, I know that some players (pitchers) can take awhile to get going. Hist last 3 of 4 years weren't that bad, but my goly look at those first 3 years of his careers, talk about brutal.

Compare his 1st quarter rating to those other QB. Compare 2011 to his other seasons. It's worthy of much discussion.

Interestingly, Dallas has a better record when Romo throws a 1st quarter interception: 16-11 (.593)

than when he doesn't: 45-32 (.584)

You forgot to mention the All Pro RB's and O-Line he's played with.

Great numbers by Romo, but man Peyton and Rodgers have some insane numbers. Lot of respect for Rodgers who yes has had some good receiving cores but rarely ever a good running game (GB finally may have addressed this with Lacy) and usually a poor OL (generally GB is top of the league in sacks against). Add in a mediocre defense. Sound familiar?

I think a lot of 2006-08 can be attributed to teams knowing we wanted to get Owens involved early. 7 of the 15 INT were on Owens' targets.

Packers have had one of the best defenses in the league over Rodgers' career, in the interest of accuracy.

Still, you're talking about 3 of the 4 highest-rated QB currently playing.

Every other QB starts out hot and cools off. Figures the Boys would have to be different.
