Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey getting reps at DT during OTAs

Defensive end Jeremy Mincey led the Dallas Cowboys with six sacks in 2014 while serving as the team's primary right defensive end. In 2015, defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli might have something new in store for Mincey. With Greg Hardy, Randy Gregory and a healthy Demarcus Lawrence added to Marinelli's arsenal, he is using OTAs to experiment with using Mincey at defensive tackle.

During Wednesday's OTAs practice, Mincey slid inside to right defensive tackle. The entire look included Hardy at right defensive end, Tyrone Crawford at left defensive tackle and Lawrence at left defensive end.

The Cowboys' impressive depth at defensive end has allowed Marinelli to mix and match. He could end up using multiple combinations in different down and distances. Mincey is especially excited about what this group can offer the team in 2015.

“We were working a bunch of different combinations [Wednesday], which was great,” Mincey told Cowboys reporters after the practice. “Randy Gregory is coming along. Really solid pass rusher. They had me and Mr. Kraken (Hardy) here working together. You know what I mean? A lot of good, man. We’ve got a lot of depth, a lot of players you can trust. I think we’ll make some impactful plays for the Cowboys.”

Mincey likely won't cause any problems if Marinelli decides to move him to defensive tackle for a high percentage of snaps.

“I love taking on guards one-on-one. I mean, it’s less running than being at end anyway.”

Mincey is a valuable piece to a defensive line rotation that is expected to generate more pressure in 2015 after finishing 2014 with just the 28th-most sacks of any defense in the NFL.

Thought earlier this season Mincey was talking about cutting weight for END. In any case, he seems to be up for whatever

Yep. I thought the same. I wasn't expecting him to play DT. If anyone has the size to play 3-tech it's Hardy. He's 6'4" 278. Crawford is 6'4" 282. Lawrence and Gregory are lightweights. And Mincey is trimming down.

At this point, it sounds like our DEs and DTS are almost all interchangeable.

Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting. We've made no effort to improve our DTs. Even Crawford, our only good DT, was our starting DE last year. It seems like we're just trying to get the best pass rushing DLmen and we haven't found any big DTs who fit that mold.

I am assuming you are talking 1T which are nothing more than space eaters, like NT in the 3-4. Personally I prefer Johnson's 4-3 where everyone just went and I think this DL is starting to look that way.

I am not under the impression that Marinelli is some sort of magician, but he is the defensive coordinator and he has had ample opportunity to draft, sign, or recruit any number of 1 techs. The front office has turned their attention to the defensive side of the ball and it's obvious that they want a non traditional 1 tech. I get tired of people saying they don't value the 1 tech. I just think they have a different vision of what they want in a 1 tech and it doesn't coincide with a lot of posters visions on this board. I am willing to wait and see the finished product..

I think we have made large strides on the DL this year and Marinelli has been given the leeway to get the guys he wants. I just hope we can stop the run.

I wanna play a 5-2-4 on passing downs.

Hardy-Mincey-Crawford-Lawrence-Gregory

Lee-RoMac

Jones-Carr-Scandrick-Claiborne

:)

This would be sweet. I'd move hardy inside...Gregory on the right and Lawrence on the left..it'll never happen ..but it would be nice

I am. I'm an official Marinelli fanboy. A Vietnam tunnel rat who only get the highest praise from his players.

He came in and turned a terrible defense into one that, at the very least, forced numerous turnovers. I haven't looked it up but we were definitely near the top of the league in that category, with marginal talent.

He's a fundamental sensei.

Marinelli wants sacks and TO's. Outside of a blue chip prospect, I don't think they believe they're going to get a lot of that kind of production at the position, and I also think their opinion of guys outside that blue chip category, the guys that are "good" compared to the rest of the pack, isn't that broad as to warrant more resources dedicated to it, especially when you consider opportunity cost of possibly selecting a top notch corner or defensive end. They feel like it's a position where they get some guys that have a little talent and are dedicated to their craft, give them a few years of tutelage and training in the system, and the results compared to one of these "good" (in our system) 1-techniques will be comparable.

You can get by with a mediocre 1-tech, especially if you have horses at DE and a strong LB core with depth. A weak DE rotation, weak secondary, and trotting out a Cameron Lawrence field is going to get you exploited much more than a 1-tech will, especially considering the amount of snaps in the nickel.

I'd like to see an upgrade to Hayden as well, but I trust the FO, whose overachieved significantly since Garrett's reign outside of the Claiborne debacle, that other positions were simply more important to address than to target any guys who are going to make a significant impact there.

Back to the topic, it's pretty obvious there's going to be a significant emphasis on pass rush this season with all the new toys. It's also pretty obvious that Mincey, our best pass rusher last season (mind boggle), is going to be playing a lot of snaps at DT in passing situations. I think they're going to try and get him as many reps as possible there, and I'd expect to see him playing a lot of snaps there in the preseason as well.

And the added advantage is the opposing offensive coordinators won't have any idea who will line up at what position on any given series.

Mincey was 290 in TC last year. He had played heavy in the past because he played a lot of snaps at DT in Jax. His weight loss during the season corresponded directly with his sacks. All of his sacks came in game 8 or later.
