Cowboys are back?
Updated Dec 21, 2009 4:12 AM EDT

Saturday was the best the Cowboys have looked all year long.

Not only did they beat an outstanding team in the Saints, but they beat them on the road and in a hostile, loud environment.

I think the Cowboys have finally realized that their receivers don’t have the separation speed. And so they changed their offense and became more methodical.

Tony Romo was taking what was given to him in the underneath passing game and they were pounding the ball. I really loved their offensive approach. They didn’t turn it over a single time.

I know he’s taken a lot of heat for the team’s record in December, but Romo has played very well the last three weeks. And their defense played well against New Orleans.

It looks like to me that if the Cowboys can maintain this same focus and intensity for the final two games, they will have a shot against anybody in the playoffs.

Here’s what I’m trying to say about the Dallas offense. Miles Austin doesn’t have speed.

Now, he is strong and he has a great burst, but he doesn’t have any separation speed. That is probably why he wasn’t in the lineup earlier in the season. He’s really not a fast guy, but he does break tackles and he does make big plays. His first touchdown against the Saints was a double move against a zone coverage. That score make him appear fast, but if you lock onto him man-to-man he doesn’t get away from you.

I think that Jason Garrett has finally figured out what Roy Williams can do in this offense. Even the other night, he dropped a slant route.

They didn’t know what he could do earlier in the year. It was a different style of offense earlier in the season.

They were doing a lot of stuff like flanking Felix Jones out and throwing to him. Now, they are alternating Jones and Marion Barber in the backfield and figured out that they are a running football team. Let’s pound the football and then throw the little drag routes, the little underneath stuff, that’s what they do best.

Now, that they have figured out what they are on offense, they are a much better offensive team. They don’t have as many big plays, but they also don’t have as many turnovers.

I'd like to know how our offense has changed from the Giants and Chargers game. I'm sure we've changed from the beginning of the year, but I don't think we've changed much from our previous two heart-breakers.

We came out and played the first complete-overall game of the season, and did it with minimal mistakes. Not a doubt in my mind they can win the Super Bowl if they maintain that type of focus and play these last two games and into the playoffs.

Looks fast enough to me. I have been saying Miles looks like a big RB playing WR. Definitely breaks tackles like one.

& what would that be?

I wish he would have elaborated on that, I don't see how Tony can trust this guy to catch the ball....that drop in the 4th was brutal and if he can't be counted on to catch the ball in these situations, where can you trust him?

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I'm still pissed off about that drop and had to vent

Less shotgun, more playaction.

Miles Austin is is fast. Most WR's in this league will get caught by DB's from behind.

Austin is one of the select who wont.

And now I know why Jimmy Johnson decided to retire... Miles Austin is a speed guy.

I think he's saying Austin doesn't have an extra gear to switch to in order to create separation if he doesn't get separation through his initial burst or bursts out of his breaks.

I don't disagree with that. A lot of cornerbacks are just as fast or faster than most receivers (and I don't know if Austin is a 4.2, 4.3 guy), but the elite speed receivers seem to have that extra gear they can hit to separate.

There are different kinds of fast, and I'm not sure Austin's straight-line speed rivals that of a Desean Jackson, but his bursts seem to be as fast as anyone's ... and he has enough speed to take advantage of it.

Yeah, I agree.

If we all think about it, that kind of makes sense. Most of the big Cowboys passing plays haven't come off a WR just blowing by guys that were on them. There usually seems to be a broken tackle, a missed assignment, or a double-move to thank.

On the bright side, Dallas may not need to have a guy like that, at least not for a while.

Austin is not a burner like D. Jackson or Moss but he is still fast.

is right. Miles Austion is not fast. He won't get away from you if you lock him down man to man.

Want to know who else was the same way ?

This guys named Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin.

Neither had " separation speed ". Neither could really get away from a fast DB on " go " routes.

Then again, just like Miles Austin, both seem to get away from DBs in the open field and, for some strange reason ( I call it FOOTBALL SPEED ) none of the three seemed to get caught when they have the ball and are sprinting towards the endzone.

Instead of looking at it as an insult, which it wasn't, look at it for what it was, a compliment.

I don't think there was much change with the Cowboys offense,,, what happened was that they had an average Saints defense that they could push around. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect that the next team we play with a strong defense is going to remind us how poor the OL is at blitz pickup/ pass blocking.

The real "change" in the Cowboys this week was the strong defensive showing,,, maybe it was the arrival of Spencer or the return of Hamlin or maybe it was Wade, but something must have happened!
