Interesting.
Seems like salaries have gone nothing but up and up.
The averages keep going up, but a lot of the highest-paid guys got new deals last year (Samari Rolle, Ty Law, Patrick Surtain, etc.), so their cap numbers were pretty low in 2005. And the Vikings have been giving their free agent signings roster bonuses instead of signing bonuses. So when they signed Antoine Winfield in 2004, his cap number that season was $12.5 million, but it dropped to $6.25 million this year. That helps lower the average of the top five by quite a bit. (The Vikings again had the non-franchised cornerback with the highest cap number in 2005, Fred Smoot at $9.1 million.)
Also, Charles Woodson's franchise tender in 2005 was higher than the normal amount (which was $8.816 million last year) because it had to be 120 percent of his cap number in the previous season.
