Free Agency before The draft

Ok I have always wondered this, how come the NFL is the only sport who has their free ageny period before the Draft? Wouldnt it make much more sense to have the draft 1st and try to plug in holes with cheap young player and make it easier to pick for the Best player available? I was thinking the players are probably against this because then thered me more veterans with out contracts since teams probably would have young guys who are cheap and could contribute but also wouldnt players make more money since teams would be desperate to fill positions that they hadn't solified in the draft?

Ok for example... the way things are now.. if we signed ummm... lets say we signed the best available Quaterback to a pretty Large contract... then in the Draft were picking some where low and the best available QB falls to us.. like a huge steal.. Now we dont draft this guy obviously because thats too much money invested in one position, even if the guy we could have drafted is a QB who has HUGE potential and a cant miss...

Now if things were Draft 1st.. we obviously draft the QB and invest the large contract on a more pressing need and this way we solidify 2 positions. Does this not make sense? am i just dumb for asking?? Some 1 give me some feedback.

I agree, thats a good point. I doubt it will ever get changed, but it would make drafting easier for teams if FA was before draft...makes more sense
