Clinton McDonald (Seattle)
NFL: 6-2, 297, age 27, 5.5 sacks in 2013, 1 start
Pro Day:
Height: 6016
Weight: 283
40 Yrd Dash: 4.83
20 Yrd Dash: 2.81
10 Yrd Dash: 1.63
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 36
Vertical Jump: 38
Broad Jump: 10'01"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.50
3-Cone Drill: 7.25

He is not a starter, but I watched their final game of he season and he played a lot and looked very good. I would expect him to be looking for an opportunity to be a starter. He played both the 3-tech and 1-tech positions in the game that I watched.

If they can afford him and he fits the profile bring him in.

Time to add to the d line.

I've always liked him. Heck most of the Hawks defensive line. Definitely someone we should be looking at. He was brought back week 2 after being cut. He had 7 tackles for loss last season and should have three good years in him. It'll be interesting to see if FA spending is on D or O.

I wonder why we didn't try to pick him up earlier in the year? Is he not much of a one-gapper?

What's it going to be then, eh?

We did not pick him up because during the offseason we had the mistaken idea that we were just set on the DL.

He was available Week One, though. Surely we knew starting Nick Hayden wasn't the greatest idea by then. Of course, that said, no one could have predicted this guy was going to be essentially the George Selvie of DTs.

This is the kind of middling free agent we are likely to look at.

There's really nothing wrong with looking at "middling" free agents. It's often just as effective, and much more economical, than going after the big name, high priced free agents. Sure, you hit some duds, but you hit a lot of duds with the big money guys, too. Rarely does it happen where one of the "first wave" guys gives you near the production for the money as he did with his old team. For every Vincent Jackson, there's a Nhamdi and a Haynesworth - at least. We gave Carr a huge chunk, and he hasn't played up to it all. And it seems like everyone else we give a bunch of money to lately gets hurt.

As for McDonald, I don't know how much he'll really command. He's come on some the last couple of years, mostly as a rotational reserve player, playing on a very good defensive line. If he were put in a position where he had to play a majority of snaps (ala Nick Hayden) on a lesser of a line, would he be as effective?

The Cowboys seem to be composed of minimum wage players like Hayden (730K) and super expensive guys like Ware (12.25M). I think they need more guys in the middle.

I think that leads to this notion that the Cowboys have all this "talent." They have (and have had) a number of big name, big money players, but some of them are/were much more name than game. Doesn't leave much left to fill out the roster, thus the depth has always been weak. One thing I've learned in sports, is that you may win where you're strong, but you'll lose where you're weak.
