Free Agent Reality

We all have our huge wish lists out there for what we would like to see the Cowboys haul in come March 2nd. As we're now just days away from the start of free agency it appears that the real list is starting to surface and Dallas' haul might be quite a bit different than anyone expects.

Here's what we *think* we know so far...

1. Dallas appears to be poised to make a run at one of the top 3 free agent lineman. I fully expect after everything I've read and heard that Dallas will sign Steinbach, Dielman or Davis. It appears they are really going to go after one of these guys to solidify that line.

2. Backup quarterback appears to be the boys second priority when it comes to free agency. There are rumors connecting them to several guys and I would be supprised if Dallas didn't sign a backup QB within the first 72 hours of free agency.

I think you will see these 2 moves mark the end of Dallas' big splash into the free agent market. I doubt you'll see them target any other high priced free agents other than at these 2 positions. My reasoning for thinking this is those 2 positions are the Cowboys only real starting holes that HAVE to be filled. All of these other needs are more or less wants and I think the Cowboys will be more than happy to fill those wants through the draft than with high priced free agents.

Eh, you might see one or two other "under the radar" type pickups. Phillips talked as if they spent a lot of time on free agency. If you're just looking to add a guard and a veteran QB that should take you all of 3 minutes to figure out.

You are right. I have read so many threads about wish list this and wish list that and the bottem line is the Cowboys are not going to just go out and spend money line Syner because it available.

A right guard and backup QB is pretty much the bulk of our immediate needs. Everything else can be obtain in the draft and through training camp.

Yes we need a backup DT. Yes we need questions answered at FS. Yes we need to get more pass rushers. Yes we need another CB. Yes we need to get younger at WR. Yes we need to find another OT. We could use some dept at ILB.

The point is you cannot have steak at every position and I dont see Jerry going all out to sign big checks for a very weak FA class. The better players were franchised and the rest that are available are B class or 30 yrs old, the back end of their career.

The Cowboys and their fans better get used to the fact that FA will not be what it used to be and teams are signing their own players. Actually I see guys spending careers with the same team like the old days because teams will draft these players and keep them and extend their contract.

One of Steinbach, Dielman, or Davis in that order. As regards the O line. Thats AFTER we resign Columbo. Then a backup QB. THEN start looking at extending the contracts of Newman and the others that will be coming up in the next year or so. If we are going to be somewhat fat on cap money this year, do it now.

No, they won't target high priced free agents, but it's quite likely they'll bring in one or two or three lesser free agents after getting the OL and backup QB they've targeted...

They might even go after a second offensive lineman, one of the lesser lights like Zach Piller, Floyd Womack, Kendyl Jacox, Seth McKinney or a Damion McIntosh... maybe a true fullback will interest them, now that Parcells is gone...

Some of their 20-odd million in cap room will go to re-signing Marc Colombo and Mat McBriar and Patrick Crayton, but there will still be a sizable chunk left over (and the Boys might well be able to free up more with a cut or two)... Jerry won't put that cash in the bank, you can bet on that...

One of the top guards will probably cost the Boys around 5 mil against the cap in the first year, a backup QB no more than 1.5-2 million... that won't wipe out the funds they have to upgrade the roster via free agency...

Actually I also see us going after a vet NT who can alternate with Ferguson. Drafting a NT & expecting him to be a big contributor his 1st year is too risky; so I'm thinking we pick decent price player in FA (maybe around 29/30) who can step in immediately if necessary while we still how Stanley develops.

I just can't find any free agent NTs who fit that bill...

Besides, if you're looking for a BACKUP to Ferguson, why not roll the dice on Paul Soliai (all 345 pounds of him) in the draft?? I mean, Jason has been pretty durable here lately, not having missed a game in five years...

jerry said on the year in review show.

We will only bring in players in free agency who will step right in and play and will do the same with the draft, higher picks I am assuming.

so keep that in mind.

Reality is a FA? Can we franchise him and get two picks from DCC? :D

DCC is the Danny Boy Snyder of Cowboys message boards, they don't have any picks...

I get the feeling that we're going to be careful shoppers in FA.

I don't see us getting Dielman or Steinbach...I'd love to have one of them, but I just don't see Jerry getting into that big spending frenzy.

PorkChop Wommack or Dockery might be more realistic.

No way it's worth it for the boys to go after Adalius Thomas. He'll be over 30 by the season's first game and he'll require way too much of a payday.

DWare, Roy Willy, Henry, Big Ferg, Carpenter, Spears, Bradie James, Akin Ayodele. That's a lot of money in that defense to go break the bank on a 30 yr-old.

Especially if it's already a talented defense that you think Phillips can make special.

I tend to agree with you.

I don't see JJ spending huge amounts of cash, esp. if we lock up Colombo, on Dielman or Steinbach.

I think we go 2nd tier with respect to OG in FA.

Yes, agreed.

And in any case, I think there are only a handful of "first tier" FAs available this year.

All of which will be vastly overpaid.
