With the previously rumored options of Tatum Bell, Warrick Dunn and others mentioned as an UFA veteran RB addition now off of the market (thankfully), I thought that this guy made sense to combine with Barber and a 1st round draft pick to form the 3 tailback roles on the roster. This is under the assumption that Thompson doesn't return.

No, he doesn't blow you way, but he's fast while being able to get inside and churn for hard-earned yards at nearly 230 pounds. Then the 1st round RB (whoever that may be) doesn't have the pressure to be Barber's primary backup from day one.

#34 Derrick Ward | RB Roster: NYFG

Full Name: Derrick Ward
Born: August 30, 1980
Los Angeles, CA
Height: 5-11
Weight: 228 lbs.
Age: 27
Pos: RB
Experience: 4 years
College: Ottawa
Drafted: Year:2004 Round:7 Pick:34, Jets

ATT 125 | YDS 602 | TD 3
2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

Comment: Ward is a three-year veteran that was a seventh-round draft pick out of Ottawa College in 2004. He has had a hard time getting much playing time as he has been buried behind both Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs. He has also had some health issues and has never been active for all 16 games of any year since he got here. He had no carries in the eight games he was active in 2006 and had just 35 carries in the 14 games when he was active in 2005. He has better measurables with his size and workout numbers than what translates to the football field. In spite of being the ideal size for a power back he does not run behind his pads great and does not break many tackles or appear to wear opponents down. He has a decent burst through the hole but will get run down from behind at times. He is pretty much a one cut and hit it upfield type of runner and lacks the power and explosion to pull it off. His fourth year is going to be critical in that he has to show the ability to be productive on the field. At this point he is just a marginal backup that is not real dangerous as a special teams' player.

He be worth a vet minimum contract if he is healthy again heck we know he is productive even with limited carries he knows how to block on 3rd downs and stuff

I am all for it myself

Honestly i didnt even know who this guy was before he landed with the giants. Players that play good for 1 year when nobody knew about them are a big Risk IMO..

Generally, risk = large Salary Cap hit. I don't necessarily think that would be the case here, especially with Ward coming off of an injury. He was more effective running the ball for the Giants than Julius Jones was for the Cowboys in '07.

You don't know who he was because he has a history of injuries.

Which is why you give him a small contract and still draft a rookie

He's JAG. We can get better value on the 2nd day of the draft.

I would definitely take a look at D Ward.

Whether he's the number 2 or number 3, I don't know, but we do need 2 RBs in any case.

I would draft a RB regardless, but I think Ward could help the roster.

He would be a GREAT signing. His only problem is he gets hurt a lot, which is a big problem. When he was on the field last year he was the Giants best RB at several points proir to his injury. Ironically he broke his leg in his best game of the year had over 130 yards at the time I believe.

That's what I thought as well.

He was playing well until he got injured. Maybe he isn't fully recovered yet?

I think the Cowboys need to add a Vet RB regardless.
