I just do not think Free can be a good guard. Mentally I do not think he can make the adjustment very quickly- as has been proven. Any kind of change seems to really mess him up.

I think RG as a whole (name the guy) is about to get greatly exposed against Atkins and the Bengals. Perhaps this spurs signing Waters. One can only hope.

Just for thought: I wonder if this could also be a veiled message to a certain G we are in talks with? Sorta of a 'we're moving on' / 'see we don't need you' kinda thing. IDK.

Of course, if they're going to try this alignment in a PS game (as Garrett said they would), then it could go wither way in terms of helping / hurting with the above speculation.

Garrett said that Free's practicing at guard is just a matter of number of healthy offensive lineman available. I don't think we'll see Free playing guard in a real game anytime soon. If we do, it will be obvious that the team's in a big time hurt locker.

Give me a break. Smith-Leary-Fred-Mack-Free is a solid lineup. If Leary or Mack gets hurt, Arkin or Killer will fill in. If Fred gets hurts, Costa will step in. And if one of tackles gets hurt, Parnell will step in. And none of those scenarios represents us being "toast."

LOL. Sorry, can't stop laughing to type out a proper reply.

Question....have you seen Free at guard to make this conclusion?

Listen I think they are just playing around with things to have some flexibility for gameday, but the point of the matter is why not try it out. Should they not try it out as to not give the storm of media and internet gurus something to talk about...yeah right. Can Free be better than Berny there, well he has better feet thats for sure, why not try it cause I believe Parnell is better than Berny anyway as a linemen.

Try it, see what happens, its practice man.......its PRACTICE......not a game, not a game, PRACTICE man.

Don't need to see it to know what happens.

I've seen what he does at right tackle and it doesn't translate to Guard.

No doubt. They can't possibly be thinking of changing Free's position now, so late in camp.
This is last resort stuff.
Has to be.

I think it has more to do with the fact that you have nothing substantial to say in response.

Well, you are talking about an offensive line with:

A. a guy who took a huge paycut because he sucks
B. a castaway career backup who has been hurt in 2 training camps in a row
C. two guys who have never played in a real NFL game

as starters. Then you go on to say a guy like Arkin, Kowalski, or Costa will just step in and be fine. Those 3 guys are lucky to be in the NFL at this point. Our best offensive lineman, Tyron Smith, hasn't even been "solid". He has been just OK.

You can lead Jerry to Waters but you can't make him drink, unless it's Free and easy Livings with low Costa.

Seriously though, if we sign Waters and have Leary ready to go game 1, this line looks solid. I don't care what anyone says.

I hope this doesn't sound rude, but after reading your post it would be nice to know if you have any kind of coaching background. Reading that our coaching staff is doing everything wrong regarding our depth situation would have alot more validity if I knew where it was coming from. Lately it just seems like everyone here knows more than our coaching staff..

No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. This is a philosophy that doesn't only apply to coaching but all walks of life. Dabble a little here, then dabble a little there, and then some more over here. Yes, you gain experience in several different facets of a company (or in this case, offensive line position) but become master of nothing. It's fine if you've got a long period of time, but there is so little time that the coaching staff gets to work with their team anymore, the practice sessions are gold. Why waste one (or more) focusing on something that is not that lineman's natural position? Wouldn't that time be better served focusing on the position you're going to be playing?

And think about it -- we've seen this with team before. Garrett had play calling duties pulled from him so he could better focus on his position as head coach. Why? Because he was spread too thin. Instead of being the best head coach he could be, his additional duties as play caller made his game management suffer. Why wouldn't the same apply to Doug Free? Now you've got him focusing on two different positions, rather than the one he should be focusing on. Spreading too thin. It doesn't make him more flexible. It makes him less of a RT than he could be because he has missed valuable practice time at the position and now has to spend additional energy focusing on duties at RG. You dig?

I don't think anyone disagrees with that, but that's a perfect world. And a) Waters hasn't been signed yet and b) it is highly questionable as to whether Leary is going to be ready for Week 1.

And that's Week 1, what about as the season progresses? We ARE going to lose offensive linemen, there can be no doubt about that.

It would be a stud line with Waters but it's muddied now.

Jerry: Say B, wanna play some ball.
BW: Naw dawg, got my Funyuns and NFL Ticket. I'm good.

I'm doubting but the likelihood is pretty good.

If this was just some kind of experiment then why haven't we always done this? Leads me to believe that our FO has little confidence in this line.

I liked the Frederick pick mainly because it addressed a big need on the line. Who was our last true cente who was effective?

We could have used another trench player over the Escobar pick. Our FO needs to grasp the concept on where games are won. Nothing has changed since our run in the 90's.We need to invest in our trenches.

Its been mentioned before: Dallas is considering all options so they can plan the final 53-man roster. Versatility on the o-line might make it easier to keep guys that can be players. A good example would be Danny Amendola.
