It's no secret that Dallas is going to be upgrading the FS position this offseason. The question is who are they going to do it with?
I would tend to think that the Cowboys would want more of a proven veteran in the secondary who can cover and free up Roy Williams more. There's also little question that Dallas will value tackling ability as much as anything from that position. That's only magnified by Zimmer's love of having interchangeable safeties.
Before any kind of cuts are made or guys are resigned, this is a quick list of guys who should be available:
Corey Chavous is a veteran who has been a ballhawk. He's also played more strong safety than free safety in recent years, and several things that I have read indicate that he may be slowing down some.
Chris Hope is a younger player from Pittsburgh, but I have a hard time imagining the Steelers letting him go.
Marlon McCree is someone who would really have my attention. He's done a good job in coverage and seems to have a nose for the ball. After drafting Thomas Davis last year and having Mike Minter, you would think that he would be someone who could be available. I have read that he is one of the Panthers top priority though.
Will Demps seems to have run out of time in Baltimore. He's played on some very good defenses, and he has experience with several different kinds of defenses. He's also still relatively young, and he has played with other great DBs. He's a solid tackler and is reputed to be good in coverage. He doesn't seem to be much of a playmaker though, although Ed Reed gobbles up a lot of plays.
Dexter Jackson should be available in Tampa. He has experience in a lot of Cover 2 looks, and he's done a goob job of creating turnovers and making plays in big games.
Marquand Manuel replaced Ken Hamlin in Seattle this season, and he has done a decent job on a good defense. He has been playing with a LB type of S in Mike Bouleware, so he might be a good fit with Roy Williams.
Deke Cooper was starting this season for Donovan Darius at SS, I believe, but he had been a backup FS for the previous few years.
Lance Shulters should be available again from Miami, but I would bet that he stays right there.
Sam Brandon should be available in Denver, but he's been playing more of a SS type of game too.
Quentin Harris in Arizona has ties to Pasqouloni from their days at Syracuse. He's never been much of a playmaker, but he must have been doing something right because Adrian Wilson had a great season playing with him for a lot of the time.
Finally, there is RW McQuarters. He's been a CB for most of his career, but he has played some FS. His coverage skills are still very good. He's also a great asset in the return game, which is something I think this team needs. Is he physical enough for Bill and Zimmer? We know that Parcells has said good things about him in the past, but I don't know if Bill views him as a FS?
So who would interest you the most? Perhaps more importantly, who would interest the Cowboys the most? I can't imagine Bill wanting to spend a ton on that position.
