Excellent decision by him and us. Gives us time to evaluate Parnell some more, without spending more money bringing in spare trash like Clabo and Winston.

Also gives Free another chance to redeem himself from an awful season at a much more reasonable price.

Wish he was gone but makes sense. No one in their right mind would take a paycut of 6 million to cut it to 1 million

I just hope this lights a fire under him. I know he is capable of better than he showed last season.

I guess it's the result I expected at this point.

Of course he's taking a pay cut if he's staying...otherwise he gets cut after June 2.
If we had shored up the RG position, I wouldn't be so wary.

But we didn't, so I am.

This does reduce the current year cap hit, doesn't it?

Salary should have been around $2M. But it's better than nothing.

It was the break even point for Dallas really.

Cost us the same to keep him as to cut him.
Not bad for the Boys at all except of course we now need Free to not suck in 2013.

Now that's over, I guess the topic turns to "Spencer - Long term deal?"

Not a fan of this move, probably has more to do with the salary cap than his overall play. I'm pulling for Parnell and a brandon moore signing.

We 'might' have shored up RG with Frederick or Leary. Not sure yet how those 3 INT spots fall out yet.

Would've included Arkin in that list but wanted to avoid obvious scorn and resentment.

If Free is as bad as he was in 2012 we are in trouble and might as well start Parnell.

I hope this is one of those screw ups by the Dallas media that is reported wrong and we still cut this guy.

If he is starting this season than we're not serious about winning. He's making it back on this team because of his country club credentials.

From a salary cap perspective, this makes the most sense for the Cowboys. I'm guessing he'll be the swing tackle this year and will be a June 1 cut next season.

I'm not a Free fan, but if Parnell turns out to be all that and a bag of chips at RT like everyone hopes, then Free won't see the field anyway, barring injury. Free staying might turn out to be a blessing in disguise because if Tyron gets hurt Free might actually be a semi functional replacement as the swing tackle.

What are our cap savings this year and next due to the salary reduction?

100% agreed. Dude was nothing more than a turnstile last year. Completely head case too. Looks like an out of shape softball player at best. Dumb move.

I would have flat out cut this guy. His first 3 months in 2012 looked heartless and pathetic.

All that said I believe Dallas is keeping him based on potential and cap results. Contrary to many reports Free has actually played at a very high level before. He lacked great power but did display great feet on the edges as a pass blocker once upon a time. Dallas seems to feel he hasn't lost it. Probably largely because he played well down the stretch when he was punished with a rotation.

The Dallas OL wasn't bad the final month.

The defense did finally fall apart and the WR corps got hurt so we has Cole Beasley, James Hanna and Dwayne Harris having to make plays. Those guys may be fine but last year that was asking to much of them.

Free basically is on a 1 year deal now. He either mega-performs or will be on the street next year when his June 2nd release is more cap friendly.

Probably the best case scenario. We all know about his performance last year, but he has some talent and gives us good depth in case one of the starters goes down.
