I don't know the economics of it but why was Free asked to take a paycut and Miles was restructured? Both are over paid...

Free has pretty much sucked since his big contract a few years ago and hasn't come close to living up to it which is why the Cowboys made him take a pay cut while Austin still produces when healthy. Austin is a good player but his hamstring issues are the main reason his production has gone down. The addition of Dez and his emergence has also cut into Austin's production.

The Cowboys could afford to lose Free and not miss much. Hence, he either took a pay cut or got cut.

Miles is still a productive player when healthy. Im also pretty sure the Cowboys feel they would be losing a guy they couldnt easily replace while that could not be said of Free. Besides, if cut, Miles would probably end up in NY talking about his new best QB Eli, just like MB.

Austin's decline was far less than Free's. And at least Austin had the injury excuse.

kinda hard to compare one guy who got beat like a rented drum to a player who was productive when healthy. also free had no option. he is still making way over his market value. had you cut austin he would have been signed in about 10 minutes and you would have had dead money to contend with. when healthy austin is a very good player
66 catches-943 yeards-14.3 YPC and 6 td's all when missing a good part of 4 games. thats very productive. had he been healthy thats a pace for 88 catches and 1100 yards

Injury or not, Austin is not worth his salary. The bottom line is that he is overpayed for the amount of production the Cowboys get out of him. It was a bad contract based on one breakout year and it has and will continue to hurt the team.

His contract was clearly based off his breakout season in 09 and the fact the Cowboys had nothing at WR at that time. TO was released after the 08 season and RW wasn't producing and was a year away from being released.

2009 - 1300 + yards
2010 - 1100 + yards
2011 - 500 + yards
2012 - 900+ yards

what do you want from a number 2 WR

Is 2008 when we pulled the stupidest trade for Roy E Williams

09 is when he got hurt so Miles stepped up his game

told all of you that Free would be on the Roster this year

No, but that's sometimes the nature of the game. You can find at least one example like that on every team, where a player signs an extension based on a good season (or less in some cases), and he doesn't live up to it.

The Cowboys don't want to cut Miles, just as they didnt want to cut Free. The difference, I believe, is that they feel Miles can still play at a high level, and would be much tougher to replace than Free. They don't have the leverage right now with Miles that they did with Free.

The difference is that Miles would have a list of teams to choose from all willing to give him pretty good money. Doug Free would have had to take a vet minimum and the list of teams wouldn't have been long. Miles is overpaid, but he's not THAT overpaid where a pay cut is even remotely possible.

Since they already prorated out his 2013 contract his base salary is only 840k so
there is no more to cut.

I've been busy planting, but I must have had my head in the sand and missed the news about Free taking a pay cut. When did this happen? thanks!
