From 1990-1998 The Cowboys went 11-6 without Troy Aikman

It was a different era back then and the Cowboys were a running team which is why Aikman didn't produce big numbers. Although the Cowboys won 5 games in a row during the regular season with Steve Beuerlein starting in 91 and a playoff game his numbers weren't very good. He only passed for over 200 yards in two of his regular season starts and completed only 49.6% of his passes finishing with a passer rating of 77.2. The Cowboys leaned on Emmitt who put up over 1500 rushing yards and 12 TD's. He rushed for over 100 yards in 4 of Beuerlein's 5 starts. Too much is dependent on the QB today and without a top receiver, a consistent running game or a defense that can rush the passer and force turnovers your odds of winning games with a backup QB aren't very good.

This is a clear indictment on the front office's failure to properly address the backup QB position. Frugality can be costly. It's obvious they realized their mistake the minute they decided to trade for Cassel. They tried to get away with a cheap QB and it blew up in their face. The same applies to the backup WR, since they had to trade for Butler after failing to address the position in the offseason. And finally RB, another position we clearly mismanaged in the offseason and ended up trading for Michael. The offseason is the time to address the roster improvements. Being frugal cost us dearly this time around.

Here are some reasons why we did well when Aikman was hurt. The cheerleaders where all pro too.

Did that team record have anything to do with Emmitt Smith rushing for 12,566 yards for those seasons?

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Anybody could have run behind those lines too.

Yes I know most of those years we had great teams. But we also ran basically the same system and wasn't this year's team supposed to be ready to contend for a Super Bowl.?

The Dallas Cowboys have now lost 8 of the last 9 without Tony Romo. With the only victory by Steven McGee in week 17 of the 2012 season in a totally meaningless game where Philadelphia sat most of its starters.

I think Tony Romo needs to be considered one of the greatest players the Cowboys have ever had in light of all the recent failures in his absence. The numbers sure seem to back it up.

Didn't we win a few games with Kitna at quarterback? I remember, in particular, a game against Indy at Indy and a game against the Giants in NY.

Did you intentionally cherry pick years between eras? Or did you forget Kitna went 5-3 when Romo went down a few years ago?

I started out looking back to see when we last won without Tony and found out that even that game was basically meaningless. I was fully aware that Kitna went 5 -3. I then wanted to see how that compared to Troy. I dismissed the 1989 season as they hadn't even ettled on a starting QB at that time. I also didn't include the 2000 season.

Actually Kitna was 4-3 in 2010 then was injured and Stephen McGee got a win vs Philly's backups in week 17.

Those teams were very talented and were build around the running game in an era when teams were often build around the running game. Even after the Super Bowl years their best CB was Deion Sanders while the current best CB is draft bust Morris Claiborne. The RB was Emmitt Smith. The current starters have been Randle and McFadden. They had Irvin healthy, We've had Williams as the #1 WR until last week with a limited Dez. The modern era is more about passing and defenses have evolved to have more pass defenders and less run defenders.

Careful. Some of the ra ra crowd is trying to spin the narrative that it is impossible to win a game in the NFL with a backup.

Sherman Williams, Derrick Lassic and Blair Thomas would disagree. ;)

How we ever won games starting Rodney Peete, Bernie Kosar and Jason Garrett back then must have been acts of God.

Kosar was a pretty good quarterback. Rodney Peete had mobility. And Jason Garrett? Well, he did graduate from Princeton U. :)

I just wonder what Garrett thinks sometimes in these games watching these debacles. Is it "well I did it! Why can't you just take advice from Brill like I did and just chuck it to Alvin Harper"?

Those were loaded championship caliber teams. How we won games with Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson in the early 2000's with the lack of talent at RB, WR and on the OL must have been acts of God.

Never lost five in a row. Had some four gamers but good ol' Dave would always snap out of it.
