From the 1 yd line, Dez or Murray?

Seattle’s awkward course of events from the one got me thinking...

Let’s say the Cowboys are in the super bowl and it's 4th and 1 from the 1, with just a few seconds left so this one play is for the Lombardi… Which option would you go with?

Dez singled up on a back shoulder/fade/jump ball.

or handing the ball off to Murray (out of your choice of formation).

Personally, I think I'd go with Dez. The play isn't as automatic as it seemed to be in the past, but I just don't know how much I like the chances of DeMarco getting in.

Evidence shows Cowboys would have run ball in same scenario Seahawks faced on fateful Super Bowl play

But what would the Cowboys have done?

Well, in 2014, the Cowboys carried out 20 plays with 2nd-and-1 as the down-and-distance scenario. Twelve were runs. Eight were passes. They converted first downs on 83.3 percent of the runs and only 37.5 percent of the passes.

In a 2nd-and-1, goal-to-go situation like the Seahawks faced, the Cowboys ran the ball 100 percent of the time. DeMarco Murray scored touchdowns on each of those occasions, breaking the plane twice in games against Philadelphia.

Both of Murray’s touchdowns against the Eagles, however, occurred in the first half. So it’s difficult to surmise what the Cowboys would have called in the exact same circumstances the Seahawks encountered in the waning moments of the Super Bowl.

But perhaps one 2nd-and-1 play from the season opener would have influenced the Cowboys’ decision. Back in September, with Dallas stationed at San Francisco’s 2-yard line, quarterback Tony Romo checked out of a run play and attempted to throw a pass. He was sacked for a nine-yard loss and the Cowboys had to settle for a field goal. It was a defining episode for Dallas, and it appeared to accelerate the Cowboys’ rapid evolution into a run-based offense that ultimately changed the trajectory of the franchise.

50 seconds, 1 time out, 2nd down, 1 yard line, RB with over 125 yards...

Run Murray, if stopped, time out
3rd down, throw to Dez. If incomplete, clock stops
4th down, run Murray

Touchdown!

Right but the OP changed the rules up. He said 4th and 1 for the game. In that case I still go Murray because I believe it would be a higher % play at the 1 behind this line. When you throw the ball in the air 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad.

Think I remember seeing a stat about Demarco that he was 8 for 8 from scoring a TD from the 1 yd line this season.
I trust this OLine to get that push and get Murray in.

Depends on a ton of stuff, like, who we're playing, how well we've been running the ball and the defensive personnel on the field. If the defense goes goal line against my heavy package, I might run some play action and throw the ball to the FB. I'd have two plays called, in any case. In a vacuum I give the ball to Murray.

Demarco all the way....all day...all night. I don't care what the past stats say about Lynch (1 for 5) in this scenario in the past. Give him the ball.

If it's 2nd down and from the 1, which is what the Seahawks were faced with, I'd run it. If it's 4th down at the one yard and Dez is single covered then I'd throw it, but lets be honest here, who in there right mind with the super bowl on the line would single cover Dez? I don't think that's a realistic scenario, because there's no way teams let Dez beat them there, it would be more like a quick pass to Beasely/Witten.

It basically comes down to, with the game on the line, last play to win the game, who do you feel more comfortable with? Handing off to Murray? Or letting Romo throw it? Tough choice, neither are wrong unless it doesn't score.

Seattle had 2 or maybe even 3 shots at depending on the clock.
They didn't have an option remotely as good as Dez.

But still, on that first play, with 26 seconds and 1 timeout left, I'd roll with Murray and our oline.

If he doesn't get in, call the TO and then still have all options on the table....knowing that if you run on 3rd down you must score or if you pass you may have one more shot if it's incomplete.

Dallas had maybe the best 3rd down efficiency in the league this year, so I would like our chances.

back shoulder fade to Dez

This is the other option should Murray fail on the first down. I don't throw a stupid pass. I throw a fade that has only two outcomes: 1) Dez catches for a touchdown or 2) The Ball falls harmlessly out of bounds.

With 26-28 seconds and a timeout left, I would run Murray on second down and passed on third and/or fourth down to Bryant or Witten.

If the same situation were reversed and Belichick had Brady, Lynch and Seattle's offensive line, even with the same personnel package Carroll used, I believe Belichick would have run Lynch on second down too. Just my opinion.
