Whats the thought on front loaded contracts ?

Its kinda the opposite of what teams are doing now. But, just as a thought, let me run this by you folks.

Say we have 20 million in cap space after this years FA and draft. What to do with the money, especially if there are no real FA we are targeting this year.

We could setup LTBE's on players to roll that space over to next year...or

What if we resigned some of our younger talent like..T-New, Roy, Witten and James (Please incert who else here).

Now, to try and simplify things just for an idea...I'll use Roy, T-New and Witten here and say we want to get say...5 year deals on all 3 of them...For the sake of argument I'll say they all want 10 million dollar SB's. What if we gave them each 5 million in SB and 5 Million added to their salary in the 1st year of the contract. So only 5 million (in SB's) would be spread over the next 5 years of the contract.

This would keep their cap numbers down, thus our cap space down (great for potential superstars to have a small cap hit) over the next 5 years. It would also be less of an impact of they were traded or hurt..retired...No dead cap space.

Different approach but I was wondering what you guys think ?

I thk we are setting ourselves up for some hold outs in that case. If the deal is front loaded and they've earned the majority of the money at the beginning f the contract, the incentive to fulfill the low paying rear end of the contract becomes relatively non-existent.

thats is the down fall to doing it. we did that somewhat with ellis but you have to really know your player and know he has his head on straight. it's a great idea if you can make it work. expense the cap space when you have plenty

Apparently this is the kind of Contract Edgerrin signed with the Cards. On Cold Pizza this morning, they said his 4 year $30 M deal will pay Edge $20 in the first two seasons. They said Rosehaus and Edge couldn't decline that offer, they hadn't seen anything like it.

Really...I think its a thought to a team that has extra cash, and doesn't just want to spend it that year, for spendings sake. Maybe it will start a trend.

30 years ago I had an idea for starting you car remotely, never followed up on that...Now its being built into cars from the factory.

Oh well, back to your normal FA activity.
