Fuzzy Thoughts on How We Can Win vs. Eagles

I have a fair amount of optimism that we can win this game. Here is why:

We are playing at home. So far we are 5-2 at home with the two losses being vs DEN and GB. We had our best offensive performance vs the Broncos and we played well against GB but for the coaching.

Speaking of coaching. Orton playing over Romo will allow us to play more to our strengths. We have the capacity to run the ball against anyone in the league and from Jerry Jones on down there will be less pressure to have a pass heavy game plan and gameday execution. I see 3 straight passes from Orton a lot less likely than what we have seen all year until now.

The Eagles do not have a lot of tape on Orton. He has only played a handful of games these past 4 years. This will be his first start as a Cowboy. We have watched DC bait traps in coverage all season. They can plan for the system but Orton's tendencies aren't even set yet. This will be the second week this year that Orton has looked at Eagles tape while the Eagles will be scrambling to figure what Orton tape is meaningful.

The Philadelphia pass defense is pretty bad mediocre pass rush for all the names in the front 7, give up a lot of YPA (7.3) and TD (23). They have gotten a good amount on INT but if we can avoid those throws we will be in great shape. This again speaks to the previous point.

The Eagles are middle of the road from a kick return average perspective but they have given up plenty of big runs. We are one of the best in the league in getting big returns. Dwayne Harris having a good day on the field would go a long way towards a W. On the flip side, the Eagles do not fare particularly well in returning kicks. They are mediocre to bad in the various return stats.

Demarcus Ware is getting better week by week. In the first half @Was, he was getting his first step before Williams could get his hands on him. As he took a pounding he was less of a factor in the second half as the skins kept running the ball but if he continues to get better. If Ware can generate a rush, I think we win.

Our LB core is better than it has been. Wilber has been a revelation, Carter's play has improved and Holloman is infinitely better than the Sims and Laurence's of the world. It's not ideal but we have had to watch Sims AND Laurence on the field at the same time. Holloman has a better chance of reacting quicker to outside runs than Sims does choosing the right gap to fill or Laurence in taking on blocks.

Morris Claiborne will play vs Eagles. That is a tremendous upgrade over Moore who has been picked on repeatedly these past weeks.

Our young safeties are playing better. Outside of Wilcox's brain fart he was tackling much better. Heath made a couple of big plays. With Claiborne putting less onus on them than Moore, it's a much better picture moving forward for our secondary.

All good reasons for optimism, and I agree with most, if not all.

It isn't going to be impossible for us to win, but it will be difficult. They'll have to come out emotional and fired up and will have to play with an up-tempo on offense.

More than anything..

I' would like to see them run a lot of no huddle with Orton.

That is what makes their offense hard to defense.

They need to try it 5-6 timess on Sunday.

And if it works, more.

I don't want to see a bunch of 3 and outs.

This IS a winnable game.

I would not place money on us, but I agree with most of Fuzzy's positives....just think the negatives not mentioned could be overwhelming.

With Romo and Lee not playing they're expected to beat us. Lets see how they handle that.

We need to press receivers, show multiple looks, contain McCoy and create pressure on defense. I see Harris with a big return or two. We have to set up our offense with some points with defense or ST.

Hurry up Sunday night!!

That is all reasonable, except:

Ware was invisible against the Skins and they are better against the run when he is out of the game. The pass rush might even be better with him out.

Spread about right but I think we can win this game. They have to limit the big plays and this would be a great game to get some turnovers.

I'm guessing Romo will start but it's only a guess which could easily be wrong. We have a better chance if he can play but still a chance if Orton starts.

I hope that after this game, we will look back and say...wow, that was easier than everyone thought, as we move on into the playoffs...

Wow, with all those positives going on you'd think the defense would be able to stop somebody,,,

I disagree with your assessment. He had burst early in the game. He was getting out of his stance and upfield much better than he had the previous tow weeks. The Skins ran the ball a ton especially in the first half until we started putting 8 in the box later in the 3rd quarter. He didn't show up after that.

All I am saying is that he looks physically better and able to get upfield. Another week might do him some good.

Are you really thinking Romo will play or is it that you are HOPEFUL he will play? Either way is fine, as its just an opinion and we all float them around here. I'm just curious.

I ask only because I do not think there is even a slight chance he plays. I think their minds are already made up and they just dont want to declare him out yet...

I base my thinking on the obvious severity of the injury, the fact that they shouldnt (and wont) take chances with their franchise guy, all the media reports...and then more subtle things like Kitna saying (paraphrase)

Hopefully Kyle plays great and I just need to stand on the sidelines.

He didnt start out his statement with anything like: Listen, we have a few more days for Tony to get better, if that doesnt happen, then we have Orton who is more than capable and either way, I'm hoping I just have to be on the sidelines.

Hey, I am wrong way more than I'm right....this is just my gut feeling. [My other gut feeling is that we still have a shot at winning this game.]

I've seen a lot of backs and dealt with it myself. You can get better in a few days. Whether it is going to be better enough for him to play is unknown. There's nothing coming out of VR that helps. They're going to let Philly keep guessing. It won't make a whole lot of difference who starts but some. Teams don't like to force Tony out of the pocket.

The key here is pressure on that defensive front 4. If we can generate it, we will win this game. Ware is getting better by the week and I firmly believe he will have a breakout game. Those whispers of his demise have reached his ears.

His burst looks fine to me and has looked good since he returned from missing time with the thigh injury.

The problem is that he can't use his upper body effectively. If a pass rusher can't get the OLs hands off of him, he can't be effective.

His style has always been to rely on his physical superiority to win and he never played with the greatest technique. Now that his physical ability has decreased, he is of minimal value.

If he does start having any success, OTs will just punch or grab his facemask once and it renders him ineffective afterwards. You can see him recoil in pain and usually leave the field afterwards.

I doubt if his neck/stinger/shoulder issue is ever 100% again. They could sign just about any healthy free agent for Ware's 12.25M 2014 salary or less in the offseason.

I will always root hard for the Cowboys, and I would not be shocked if they won this game, which would make me very happy. But I am expecting a loss this week, and the loss would not disappoint me. The Eagles are playing very well right now, beating the team that totally dominated us, last week. We would need some very good things to happen early, special teams, turnovers, etc. Even if the running game gets rolling, Garrett will eventually go away from it, it is who he is. We need to take a good lead on the Eagles and keep pounding away, because Garrett will find a way to keep the opponenet in the game.

I agree. This is a tough game no question it is a division rival we know them very well and they know us. McCoy is the key to that Philly offense both in the passing game and the ground game. Offensively I think Orton will need the help of the running game more so than Romo because he does not have great ablity to avoid the rush and extend plays as Romo does so I think keeping Orton in ball control down and distance situations become more critical than it would be for Romo.

I think in the end the big key will be turnovers,
