Members of two Denver-area gangs linked to the fatal shooting of former O.D. Wyatt High School star Darrent Williams were arrested Thursday, the latest move in a wide-ranging federal investigation of gang activity in the Denver area.
Williams, 24, a cornerback for the Denver Broncos, was shot in the neck early New Year's Day.
Forty-nine arrests were made Thursday. One of those arrested Thursday is a "person of interest" in Williams' slaying, according to the Denver TV station 9 News.
A second man described as a "person of interest" remains at large.
The station identified the men as Vernon Edwards, 29, and Daniel Harris, 36.
The gangs, the Rolling 30s Crips and the Tre Tre Crips, are linked to the notorious Crips gang in Los Angeles.
The men arrested Thursday "are the worst of the worst," the TV station quoted U.S. Attorney Troy Eid as saying.
The gang members were arrested based on indictments handed up in February by a Denver grand jury. The charges include cocaine distribution, money-laundering and firearms violations.
Williams, whose funeral in Fort Worth drew nearly 3,000 mourners, including many NFL players, was shot as he left a New Year's Eve party in downtown Denver, police have said.
Several Broncos and Denver Nuggets players and friends had been celebrating at a downtown Denver nightclub, police have said. There was some sort of altercation, according to police and witnesses.
Minutes after Williams' Hummer limo left the club, at least 14 shots were fired from another vehicle.
