Bobby Carpenter Has a Shot ... Really. Honest.

With the Cowboys having selected another supply of linebackers it appears that former first round pick Bobby Carpenter will be kicked to the curb soon.
Not so.

At least not if you believe coach Wade Phillips. Phillips has told Carpenter that it's a clean slate.
Carpenter will be given the chance to win Kevin Burnett's backup inside linebacker job, at least.

"That’s Bobby’s opportunity to step in because he’s that kind of athlete. We’ve challenged him to do that," Phillips said. "I think it’s finding his niche and going from there. It may be us not giving him enough opportunity. I told him that. It’s a new year this year. I wipe the slate blank. I said, 'Hey, whatever you can do and do really well I’m going to try to recognize that. If you show me you can do things to help us I’m going to get you in there.' He’s a worker. He’s going to work at it and give him every opportunity to be the player he thinks he is."

Right now, Carpenter will be trying for time behind expected starter Keith Brooking. Brooking has been a three-down linebacker before, and if he's the best player the Cowboys won't take him off the field. But there does appear to be an emphasis to at least give Carpenter an extended look, and try to create situations where Brooking doesn't have to play every down.

Said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, "I think you’ve got to put Bobby Carpenter on the field with his style of play. He runs good. He’s great lateral. You’ve got to maximize what he does best. He does a lot of good things. If he gets in the game he participates in some plays. I think we’ve got a good read and a good feel for his style of play. I’ve had it said he might have been more effective in a 4-3 because of his range and mobility. What we’re doing right now gives him a great chanceto play. I think this will be a good opportunity for him. It’s not a question you need to see something now or else. I have a feeling we know exactly what we’re going to see. My personal feeling is visiting with our staff and Wade it can be productive for us."

Still gotta hit someone in a 4-3, so... no.

I agree with that.

This is Carpenter's best shot to carve out a role for himself - as a nickel LB in this type of defense.

I thought he played well vs. Seattle in the playoffs and also vs. Vick and the Falcons during a regular season game.

There just seems to be something missing, however.

I think he's going to have a battle to even make this roster. IF he makes this roster, that means the staff will play him in some role on defense in 2009.

Pretty much says that he hasn't shown him anything in the three years and this is it.

I hate taking quotes out of context but that cracked me up.

Who thinks Brooking will make it through the year injury free? Carpenter just might have a chip left in this card game.

Until Jason Williams blows him away in preseason. :D

Carp would be a superstar in flag football.

I wanna draft him for my team there.

I just wouldn't ask him to block.

Wade is giving Carpenter an oppertunity what Carpenter does with the oppertunity is on him. I take Wade comment of "If you show me you can do things to help us I’m going to get you in there" If not then he will not see much playing time.

I think it may even be one step further than that for Carp.

If he doesn't show enough this TC, I think the Cowboys will cut/trade him and go with one of the younger guys. I doubt he's on the roster if he can't show enough at this stage.

And we won't need him for STs either as we've drafted so many LBs and Secondary players this year.

I agree. I think this is it for Carpenter sink or swim.

I think someone will have to beat him out or at least show enough potential to get rid of him this year. Nothing this year then definitely good bye next. I hope someone either beats him out or is just someone who can't be cut or risked to be put on the PS. That's my best guess but who knows. Maybe he suddenly finds his 'niche'.

Regarding Wade's and Jerry's comments, they sound like they are pleading with him to give them something, anything.

It is time for Barbie to put up or shut up.

Create a youtube video of him running a 4.3 and the Raiders might give us their first rounder next year.

Keith Brooking got roasted in coverage against the Cardinals.

They will not leave him in very long on passing downs.

That was an awful defensive scheme that had him trying to cover 25 yards downfield.
