Cut Curtis who is a good 3rd TE option IMO, for a washed up mouth piece?

I promise you this...Campbell would do one thing Curtis does horribly, BLOCK...Campbell wouldn't let Tony get lit up the way Curtis did.

Campbell was a great role player and lockerroom guy but it's time for new leaders to emerge and take charge.

If he can play special teams, I'm all for it
He can't so it is pointless. Whomever takes Curtis' spot has to be able to do that. You can't just keep him around to block or get injured or whatever.

Love Dan Campbell, and we definitely could use his attitude, but he's just too done at this point. He was too beat up to play even a couple of years ago.

....really?

No kidding.

Every now and then you see a post that just makes you literally groan.

Yes. Let's replace the one player on this entire roster that does his job to near perfection and has no drama attached to him. That sounds like a brilliant idea.

Maybe if he adds 40 pounds and moves to tackle....:p:

he does have a history with garrett in ny.

but he makes no sense here.

there is a veteran out there who could come in and give some help to the daily routine of how things are done. He wouldnt complain about getting the ball, he wouldnt call out the qb or the coach, he would be a good example and he has experience as a winner.

he also is close with garrett.

And yes, I am talking about Amani toomer again. If owens and hurd are removed as I imagine they will be, toomer could come here and be a role player on the field and a big time mentor in the locker room. Plus he would be an ally to garrett and maybe restore some faith in garrett and the guys would see that and instead of questioning everything they would start believing and working as hard as they can to be good players.

he is old and offers nothing more than crayton, but he has intangible qualities and could really help our locker room and be a good fit in a new spread it around offense.

I know I will get bashed for that, but I believe amani toomer could be a leader like that and settle down this ridiculous group of loudmouths we have at wr.

If they did that, another TE would have to go. Typically, there isn't room for 4 TE's on a 53 man roster, when you consider the more injury proned positions such WR and DB's. I wouldn't mind having him back, but with having Witten and a potentially great receiving TE in Martellus, Campbell's role would be very limited. I'm not sure that's a position he's looking for.

more importantly, The third tight end needs to be a major contributor on special teams, so does the 2nd.

So an older tight end wouldnt make sense.

Not going to bash you for it. Actually, I think it makes sense if we do end up cutting Hurd and Owens.

We'd have Williams as our #1 (meh), Austin (young speed guy), Crayton (veteran WR), another young guy in Stanback, and a veteran Toomer.

God forbid an injury to a WR like Crayton or Williams; we'd have a vet who could fill in. And maybe someone like Toomer can help the development of someone like Austin also.

If we keep Owens... I'm not sure its needed.

The problem, I think: You can't buy leadership, whether on the cheap with Dan Campbell or at a high price with Ray Lewis. Regardless of anything one might have thought about Zach Thomas, this past year, I think he himself made a good point: You can't walk in the door of a locker room and claim leadership. You have to earn those spurs, and I'm not sure you can do so by pointing to hardware earned in other locations.

Leadership, I think, must evolve naturally.

Agreed. If you are purely a leader by example, like Zach Thomas.

Ray Lewis is an extremely animated VOCAL leader, as well as one who leads by example.

The antithesis is someone like Bradie James, who was always more of a vocal leader (but toward the end of the 2008 season he started to lead by example as well).

3 string TE's carry no locker room clout.

You have to at least start to be respected and be designated a team 'leader'.

Cowboys could pick up this leader

Maybe the Cowboys should go after one of their former players in search of a strong locker room presence. Ex-Cowboys tight end Dan Campbell is a free agent after he was released Monday by the Detroit Lions. Now, Campbell is a definite leader this team could use. He helped guide a young Jason Witten and he could help stabilize a locker that sorely lacks accountability.

Campbell, who is a top-notch blocker, could also help greatly with fellow ex-Aggie tight end Martellus Bennett, who needs to learn further what it means to be a professional. But Campbell (in Dallas from 2003-2005) has dealt with triceps and hamstring injuries and been limited to just three games the past two seasons and is a 10-year vet.

What is this need to get a "leader."

If we had a decent HC in the first place there would be no talk about needing leaders.

geez.
