Irvin to NFL Network

There is a report out by USA Today stating that former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin is going to take a very part-time gig with the NFL Network. Irvin had been an analyst with ESPN as late as 2007 until the two parted ways.

Now Irvin has taken his mouth to the local airwaves hosting a radio show on ESPN 103.3 FM.

The plan, according to the report, is to use Irvin for this weekend's coverage of the Hall of Fame induction festivities.

This could very well be a glorified audition for Irvin. Irvin's good buddy is Deion Sanders, who works for the network as well.

And, just a guess, the money is just a bit better over on the TV side of things, too.

I always liked when he grabbed everyones hand's on the show. I wonder if he will do that :) Steve Young looked to really hate him in the beginning.

IRVIN LANDING AT NFLN, FOR NOW
Posted by Mike Florio on July 22, 2008, 10:29 a.m.

Michael Hiestand of USA Today recently reported that Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin, who was dropped by ESPN in early 2007, will join NFL Network.

The assignment is temporary, but is likely the television equivalent of dipping a big toe into a small pool.

Irvin will work the league-owned network’s coverage of the 2008 Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

”There’s no better example of true passion for the game . . . than the emotional induction speech given by Michael last year,” NFLN executive producer Eric Weinberger told Hiestand.

We agree. And, as we’ve previously observed, the various networks could use more genuine passion for the game in their presentation of it to an impressionable public.

In Irvin’s case, the challenge will be to keep him from going over the top. A good start? Never allow Irvin and Deion Sanders to be in the same city (OK, same state) at the same time.

NFL network did say he would do the HOF gig, at least, Rich Eisen said it few weeks ago.

Irvin has, said, one of the reason, things didn't work out with ESPN TV was that, they didn't want him to do regular Radio, and they only wanted him to exclusively do TV. So he parted ways. Not sure, how much of that is truth, but considering the guys who have replaced him, They made a good choice.

I thought the same thing when they let Sterling Sharpe go. He was pretty good on ESPN, not that his opinions were on spot etc., but he was good entertainment though, much like Irvin.
