OTA observation deck

Here's some tidbits for you Cowboys fans from Wednesday's OTA practice at Valley Ranch. This is the last week of the OTAs before next week's minicamp....

* Star of the day: WR Miles Austin. The man some consider to have shaky hands at times during his young career made some nice catches today. His highlight came when he toasted former OTA star CB Pacman Jones in the end zone on a long pass from Tony Romo. Austin's leaping catch during team drills was impressive.

* Had a bad day: CB Pacman Jones. Beat by Austin for a touchdown, dropped a punt and Austin was seperating on him on his routes. Jones got a lot of reps on Wedneday but did not stand out.

* Bobby Carpenter sighting. The much-maligned linebacker had a good practice highlighted by a diving pass breakup on a short pass to rookie RB Tashard Choice.

* Speaking of Choice...he has a nice little burst to the outside.

* No one on this team looks smoother catches punts than CB Terence Newman. But it's just too risky to use him there full time.

* Wade Phillips was at it again. He slapped hands with Newman and starting shaking his hand like it hurt. Maybe it did. But yes, it's the same thing he did with Tony Romo on the sidelines during a game and the TV camera caught it.

* WR Terrell Owens gave the young safety Courtney Brown a lesson burning him on a long TD pass during 7-on-7 drills.

* RB Keon Lattimore, the younger brother of Raven Ray Lewis, made a nice catch against LB Kevin Burnett in the flat during 7-on-7 drills.

* Odd moment of the day: RB Marion Barber slapped QB Tony Romo on the rear during drills so loud you could hear it from the sidelines.

* One-hand Witten: TE Jason Witten made a nice one-handed catch toward the end of practice.

* Marion Barber may have a hard time with the new Marion Barber Rule, which will not allow him to put his hand in an opponents face mask. After catching a screen pass, he put his hand up in the face of CB Evan Oglesby.

* NT Tank Johnson is playing like the beast that he calls himself right now. He had PBU on a pass that hit him in the chest during the two-minute drill.

* Where's Roy Williams? Not on the field during the two-minute drill. CB Anthony Henry now covers the TEs in his place on the dime package.

* Big day for the Frog: TCU-ex CB Quincy Butler intercepted Brad Johnson who underthrew (shocking, right?) receiver Mike Jefferson on a long pass.

* Good and bad: TE Martellus Bennett had a nice catch against Anthony Henry from Richard Bartel but also had a drop.

* Bad sign: FB Deon Anderson, who has put on some serious pounds in the offseason, had a big box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts in his hands at his locker after practice. Some guys prefer energy drinks, Deon prefers glaze.

Canty signs one-year tender

Here's the press release from the Cowboys...

Chris Canty signed his restricted free agent tender offer today. It is a one-year contract. Canty, entering his fourth-year in the league, started all 17 games for Dallas last season at defensive end and recorded a career-best 46 tackles. He finished tied for third on the team with 3.5 sacks and tied for fourth with four tackles for a loss. He also blocked a field goal against Minnesota (10/21/07) that Patrick Watkins recovered and returned for a pivotal touchdown. For his career, Canty has started 34 of the 48 regular season games he has played and tallied 133 tackles along with seven sacks, nine tackles for losses, 18 quarterback pressures, three pass breakups and one forced fumble. He was originally drafted in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft out of the University of Virginia.

Last OTAs week

Today was the final day of media access in the final week of the OTAs...Next week the Cowboys will have a minicamp.

Free safety Ken Hamlin and wide receiver Terry Glenn remain out of the OTAs. Hamlin still doesn't have a long-term deal done and Glenn has to sign an injury settlement before he can return to the field. More from today's practice coming...

Carp and Austin are battling in June, but they better be battling in August as well.

Can't expect Pac to be all world just yet.

Choice - He is going to be a good one.

Tank - I still say he should start at NT and Ratliff should go back to DE in place of Spears.

Roy not on the field for 2 minute drills. If this continues into training camp he is going to start barking. Reason? Because he knows the world is watching and the last thing he wants is to not be given a chance to prove he can improve his coverage skills this season.

Wade - Enough with the 'that hand slap hurts my wittle fingers', it's corny.

I didn't think this was covered in the rule change. I thought they got rid of the 5 yard variety of incidental contact on the facemask.

Don't want to be accused of censorship...

Besides I think most people are on Roy burnout.

You can say that again. Please people, the Lions aren't going to trade him and will franchise him next year too. :p:

If Tank plays really well then do we have a chance to keep him next
season?

I don't know any safety that consistently lined up against TE 1 v 1 in the NFL besides RW. Every1 knows its a mismatch TE's nowadays a piratically unguard able to fast for LB's to big for Corners and Safeties. They provide mis match problems no matter who D's them.

Who covers the TE's then? I mean on other teams, who covers them?
A LB? DE? NT? CB? obviously nbot a safety.

As far as I know, in a standard defense, the Safety or a LB is responsible for the TE.

Well this thread is on its way to being Roy'd out.

so Ill go another way.

I disagree that having Newman return punts full time is too risky now. I think if Pacman can get into shape that Dallas has the depth at that position to get Newman a few more returns.

Austin was getting separation over everyone at the end of last year. he was making Woodson and Harris look silly and they are supposed to be the best CB tandem in the league.

Woodson didn't suit up in the game last year in dallas and Harris was mostly on TO.

however, Austin did get open some in that game.

Austin has it all; he just needs to consistently catch the ball.

So Anderson gets hurt and goes from Cricket to Refrigerator over one offseason....Maybe Ironhead Hayward is his idle and he wants to be a big bulldozer like his hero.

So no safety can cover a TE ... and no safety can cover a WR ... exactly who do safeties cover? And why on earth would anyone draft one highly or spend big money for one since they seemingly don't do anything? Sounds like your 4th CB deserves more money than your starting safety ... he certainly has a harder job.
