The issue is Jerry.

That sums it up. He is the issue, will be the issue, and has been the issue since that darkest of days - March 30, 1994.

Somebody should put a muzzle on Jerry, the owner/GM, not Wade.

Please let this be a team directive.

Screw the whining about no news. Silence is golden.

Amen. Memo via secure courier to TO, Crayton, and Carp with cc: to all the rest.

Not trying to be negative here, asking an honest question.

Isn't it usually the assistant coaches that are muzzled when there is an information lock down? Isn't it usually the head coach who is the face and voice of the team?

Why is it that in Dallas the Head Coach is locked down?

I know people get tired of hearing it, and I understand why, but to me, this is just one more reason why it isn't really about Wade Phillips at the moment. The issue is Jerry.

If you really believe Wade Phillips can get the job done, fine. I don't agree, but I can live with it. But if you are going to ask Wade Phillips to get the job done, at least TREAT THE GUY LIKE THE HEAD COACH OF YOUR FOOTBALL TEAM.

*Let him set the fines
*Let him be in charge of controlling what comes from his players and assistant coaches to the media.

When the head coach is telling people that the head of PR told him to be quiet, good golly, it makes him look like just another employee, (I know he IS an employee), instead of the guy in charge of his football team.

Absolutely agree.

I think only a tiny percentage of people *don't* agree with what rcaldw posted.

We get to see over the next several weeks if Jerry will at least learn on some things. At least Pacman is gone. If TO goes, I'll believe that Jerry has at least seen the light a tiny bit.

I don't think anything crazy is in the works, the idea of Cowboys staff and players keeping their mouth shut has to start at the top, and it looks like it has begun, this is a good thing.

Except Garrett throwing TO under the bus......

Several good points here.

I think Wade's mistake was telling everyone that PR told him to keep his mouth shut, like he couldn't even summon up the courage to be mean to the media without explaining himself.

If he had just said, I've got nothing to say. That would have been fine, but he had to explain why and that ruined it.

I don't know why he'd ever talk to them except for what's mandated in his contract. Literally everything he says is somehow spun to make him look stupid or incompetent.

Galloway was even saying that Bruce Read was a scapegoat. When you get trashed for firing an obviously terrible coach, the criticism has officially reached the ridiculous stage.

Dude I know you love him.

But it is well deserved. He wants all this credit and loves to be patted on the back, but he has no backbone and no ability to handle criticism.

I wouldnt be suprised that the reason he doesnt talk is because he knows its only negative.

When you have that type of personality and you have shown time and time again that you will toot your own horn when things are good and then duck tough questions, the media is going to kick your butt. THat is exactly what happens here.

He loves to talk about his above 500 winning percentage as a coach, but he gives no credence for his december failures and playoff failures. He has every excuse in the book when that stuff is brought up.

That is why the opening press conference at training camp was absolutely embarassing for him and jerry. They contradict what they say in their actions all the time and they contradict each other during the week all the time.

The media is going to do nothing but get worse. the media was ready to kill parcells in december of 04, but he had a backbone and answers that made sense. Wade phillips has excuses and ducks difficult situations.

The reality is we may have an organization that is run by two people who do not know how in Jerry and Wade and the players who came up in the discipline and structure of Parcells here can see it instantly and that affects them.

I hate to even say this because it is laughable, but I feel like I can understand the players train of thought on some level. IN high school my baseball coach was basically a take no prisoners drill seargent, he knew the game inside out, he knew exactly how to teach the game and how to use the players he had to win. His teams and the teams I was on when I was there are always competing for championships. We feared and respected the guy, I absolutely love the guy. Well in the summer the same group of players played for a layed back coach who let us do what we wanted, didnt mind if people were late for warmups etc....and we couldnt beat anybody. Same darn people, but once people who have been around the discipline and the structure they notice it when it is gone instantly and it has an effect on how you play.

I actually got into a huge argument with my coach from the summer one time because After practice I gave him a hard time about why werent doing certain things a certain way, It drove me nuts that I knew there was a proper way to do things and a wrong way to do them, and this guy did them wrong and expected to win.

I think the same is happening here. Everyone worked in unison under the old staff, now everyone works individually.

Wow. I don't love Wade nearly as much as you hate him, that's for sure.

And the truth is that I don't "love him" at all. I just don't think he's the completely clueless buffoon and idiot that most people love to claim he is. There's a big difference, no matter how much people want to make everything into an absolute. So let's get that clear.

And you think Wade really deserves all the abuse he gets from the media? About literally everything he does from practically everyone in town save Archer? Even about firing the awful Bruce Reid? And about firing the unrespected Brian Stewart? Funny how when Parcells got it, it was because he was an evil northeasterner and these Texans resented him because he was a carpetbagging yankee. When Wade gets it, it's absolutely deserved.

Guess what, my high school football coach survived the Bataan Death March. Seriously. He came out of retirement to coach again and was as tough an old coot as you can ever imagine. And yes, we loved him. But that doesn't mean being a drill sergeant like I experienced is the only way to do things, either. And I still say that a crusty old curmudgeon like Buddy Ryan wouldn't hire Wade if he were as fluffy soft as people claim. He wouldn't even have been in a position to get such a coveted job after years of an NFL DL and LB coach if he were as cuddly as people say.

It's just that people see Wade as fat and old and unwilling to trash players in the media, and they assume he goes out and sleeps in the car during practice. (And it's also funny how the 60+ year old Parcells being called "man t*ts" was an outrage, but with the 60+ year old Wade it's perfectly acceptable.)

It's a real shame Parcells quit and the greatest coaching staff in history had to be disbanded, but that isn't Wade's fault, is it?

And I love how Parcells built this marvelous machine that went 9-7, 9-7 his last two years, but now 13-3, 9-7 is tearing it all down into a shambles and 5-11 here we come.

Good grief. Wade is far from perfect, I can admit that with no problem. But the real problem is Jerry not even letting him coach. Wade should be allowed to hire his own assistants and coach the team the way he wants to -- same as any other coach.

That's my position.

I can agree with this 100%, and furthermore, until Jerry changes this, it WON'T MATTER WHO WE HIRE.

How dumb is Wade Phillips?

Instead of just saying 'no comment' or something similar he actually admits to being shut down by the Cowboys PR department.

That's a guy who will lead an NFL team to a Super Bowl?

The man just admitted he has no balls left within the organization.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Wade said that jokingly... Like, "I'd love to talk to you, but Rich told me not to" with a smile on his face.

Maybe not. But I could see that, especially after the report said what a good mood he was in.

Eh, forget it though. Why do I even bother.

Absolutely! :) I've always said that... Too much of the written word is too hard to interpret, especially from writers that love to, um, spice things up.

well I do love parcells as much as you hate him!!!!

and My neighbor survived that too, My dad was the only one he would talk to it about. He spent the entire war there. amazing stuff.

anyway, Its jerry like you said, you know I believe that.

But wade is bad with the media, and when he has the owner pushing him around and then the players it means something. He is to very much to blame for the perceptions of him if they are that, because of the way he reacts to difficult situations. He doesnt seem to be able to handle it.

And my point about my baseball coach was not that his way or that type of way is the only way, just that when the core of the team came into the league under that style they have to look at softer less disciplined people a little funny. Especially when a bunch of losers like owens, jones and johnson the spokespeople when they went through none of the hard work that the core did with parcells.

and citing parcells record is hard to compare to wades. He didnt have a quarterback and could never get the line right. Wade has had a developed ware and romo from day 1. Parcells had to develop that, wade just has to manage it, which he clearly can not do.
