Chris Canty is a lot of things, stupid isn't one of them.

After the Cowboys' season-ending loss in Philly, I asked Canty if he wanted to come back. He said he does, then he added, "I don't think they want me back."

Canty was looking around a locker room that was loaded with teammates had signed long-term extensions, yet he hasn't.

The Cowboys do want Canty back, but at the right price.

In four NFL seasons, Canty has developed into a solid, pro player. He's probably never going to be a star, but he'll always be a pro and pros have a place in the NFL for a long time.

The Cowboys don't plan to get into a bidding war for Canty, who because he's a defensive end will likely have big offers. Teams will usually overpay for defensive ends.

In four seasons, Canty has 10 sacks. According to NFL.com, he has 148 tackles and eight passes defended.

Don't be stunned if the Dolphins call for the former fourth-round pick.

If Canty does not return, it could open the door for Jason Hatcher for a shot at starting. Also, expect the Cowboys draft a defensive lineman, too.

The question is, do you want Chris Canty back?

I really like him as a person and a pro, but I think someone will throw an insane amount of money at him. And if they do, we should let him go.

Canty is everything that is right with the Cowboys. Quality, character player...i think we need to keep those.

If there's no cap in 2010, what's his price really matter?

And if there is?

I like Canty, but at some point the Cowboys will have to let some people go that are decent players. You can't give everyone that isn't awful a 6 year contract.

I think it starts with Canty, but who knows, Jerry might open up the wallet once more. I like Canty, but he's nothing special.

His edge is that he knows the system and does his job well. He plays on Ware's side by the way, so he must be doing something right.

I know I've posted this before, but would you guys take Canty or Igor Olshansky? I did some searching and saw that he is not expected to return to the Chargers after this season. He knows the system cold after playing in Wade's system for a few years, so there wouldn't be much, if any, transition. I saw where he wants a big contract, but of course, who doesn't? Canty probably does, too.

Another thing is that IIRC Parcells liked him a lot coming out. Wonder which one Parcells would prefer, if he even wants to spend for a DE.

I want him back for the right price. However, if he doesn't come back to Dallas I anticipate Ratliff finally moving to DE and us going DT heavy in free agency and the draft.

Wonder what wade thinks. I say that because he has worked/coached with both of them so I would be curious what he thinks about it. Also may come down to how much money each is wanting.

If Wade gets to come back then Canty darn sure deserves it.

I'm with the majority here. I want him back but not at some insane price. I think he is a solid bit not spectacular 3-4 end. I think we really should have tried to lock him during the season but maybe he was asking for too much.
Canty, 6'7"/300, age 26 has averaged 37 tackles and 2.5 sacks over his 4 years in Dallas.

I'm not sure I can tolerate a Jason Hatcher/Stephen Bowen platoon as his replacement though.

Igor Olshansky, 6'6"/309, age 26, (averaged 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks) can supposedly void the last year of his deal and become a free agent. He played for Wade when he was the DC in San Diego but I would imagine he will cost as much or more than Canty.

Shaun Cody, 6'4"/310, age 25, (averaged 23 tackles and 0.5 sacks) who Dallas suppodely considered drafting over Marcus Spears, is available. He has been quiet in Detroit but he was a high motor guy at USC. He could be a cheaper alternative.

If I'm so pretty, why am I available?

This blog should say that Canty looks around in the locker room and sees how badly Jerry overpays underachieving players. He wants to be one of them too. This was a contract year and Canty did nothing. Just like Spears will do next year. If we can get a real NT, we have plenty of DEs.

Same here. How cool would it be to have a beer with some of these coaches and get their true thoughts on a lot of the guys they've coached? Especially with Wade, since he never says anything negative in public.

And Peoples Choice, is Igor that much better? I haven't kept up that much with him since he was putting up the great strength numbers around draft time a few years ago. I know he got a lot of accolades in SD his first couple of years, but I haven't heard a lot about him since.

But back to BP, I've wondered if our not re-signing Canty could have had anything to do with Igor being free at the same time. Probably not, but I always wondered why we re-signed so many of our guys but not Canty.

I dunno, Canty seems to me like a true pro and I love his attitude, but I think we need some new blood in the locker room. I'd almost take a new guy even if it were six of one, half a dozen of another.

Of course we want him back but not if he wants a huge deal. Get rid of more dead weight like Ellis and keep him.

i think in Wades system Canty is disruptive for Ware and not rushing in every play. So he has done well for the system.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Agreed. I am sure he feels left out. Poor fellow.

Yeah I think it was us wanting to get the other guys under contract last year and also give Canty one more year to see how he did in wades defense before signing him.

I think they wanted to get all of those ones out of the way so they could also do Wares this year as well.

Who knows.
