Despite fractured neck, Texan walks into practice

From wire reports

Houston Texans defensive tackle Cedric Killings surprised his teammates by walking into practice Friday, just five days after fracturing a vertebra in his neck.

Killings wore a neck brace and had a black eye from the headfirst collision with Indianapolis receiver Roy Hall on Sunday but couldn't keep a huge smile off his face.

As he walked in, someone yelled "Oh God," before players began clapping.

He had been discharged from the hospital about an hour before the reunion.

"We're making you our honorary captain this week, and we're going to go [to Atlanta] and get a W," coach Gary Kubiak said.

Briefly
Steelers: Wide receiver Hines Ward has been ruled out of Sunday's game at Arizona because of a sprained right knee. Nate Washington is expected to start in Ward's place.
Panthers: Quarterback Jake Delhomme said he is "holding out hope" he could play Sunday against Tampa Bay despite missing his third straight day of practice because of a strained right elbow.
Raiders: Quarterback Josh McCown (broken toe) will miss Sunday's game against Miami, giving Daunte Culpepper the start.
Packers: Running back Vernand Morency (sprained right knee) is scheduled to play Sunday against Minnesota, but rookie Brandon Jackson (shin) is questionable.
Lions: Rookie receiver Calvin Johnson (back) is questionable for Sunday's game against Chicago.
Colts: Linebacker Rob Morris, who has missed two games because of a strained abdominal muscle, will start Sunday against Denver.
Falcons: An Indiana bank sued suspended Michael Vick for not repaying loans involving a car rental business.
Fan lawsuit: A Jets season-ticket holder filed a class-action lawsuit against New England and coach Bill Belichick. The suit stems from the Patriots taping signals from Jets coaches Sept. 9. Carl Mayer is seeking more than $184 million for Jets ticket holders.
