FWST: Why Detroit could be good job for Garrett

Let's say Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is the guy the Detroit Lions want as their next head coach. Why would he take it, you say? No. 81 in Dallas might have something to do with it.

But maybe he says why can't Detroit be another Atlanta or Miami? Dreadful one year, in the playoffs the next. Sounds a little crazy. Granted, Atlanta and Miami have better owners and GMs than Detroit -- no question. But take a closer look at Detroit's possibilities. The Lions will have the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Garrett could get his franchise quarterback -- Georgia's Matt Stafford (Highland Park grad) or Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. Then, he can benefit from the Cowboys. Detroit has the Cowboys' first-round pick from the Roy Williams trade. The Lions will also pick 19th or 20th in the first round. If they give Garrett a big say in the draft that might be a smart move. He wanted Felix Jones over Rashard Mendenhall even though Mendenhall was the higher-rated back on the Cowboys' draft board.

Detroit will also pick 33rd, the first pick of the second round. It could allow him to get a cornerstone offensive tackle.

Can Garrett be the guy to rid the Lions of awful football?

stafford at #1 and Someone like Oher at #20 would be a very good start for the lions. Then look to Defense with #33.

Don't forget this is Detroit.

My guess is Crabtree with the #1 and a KR with the second #1. Then a punter with the 2nd round pick.

LOL, Millen isn't there anymore.

I hate the Lions already. Might as well hate them a little more if this happens.

Wow, TO must really be horrible if it makes coaching the Lions seem attractive.

My feelings won't be hurt either way. If he does get a HC job elsewhere I wish him the best!

Although not so sure I would choose Detroit as a place to start my head coaching career.

i think the Detroit job is being underrated at the moment. but with Millen gone and no longer in charge of the draft, and having the #1 pick, our pick at #20, and the 1st pick in the 2nd, there is a lot of potential for this team.

plus, the expectations couldn't be lower.

3 picks in the top 33 of the Draft plus a star like Calvin Johnson and a weak NFC North Division.

He could do a lot worse.

The pieces are in place to rebuild, it's just a lot on your plate to handle as a first year head coach.

At least if they go 1-15 next year there was an improvement.

They'll do better than 1-15 unless they hire a Rich Kotite or Ray Handley.

I would gladly take the Lions job.

The owner is hands off and very very reluctant to make changes.

The bar is set low so you cnan build as you see fit. Wanna cut half the team? OK.

This team could also win 10 games next year playing in that division. They could and should very well have the division's best QB by 5 minutes into the draft.

They have a bevy of draft picks, low expectations and free reign.

Other than being in Detroit what's not to like.

Simular to the job Sean Peyton took over in New Orleans. At this stage any improvment would be big in Det.

Because if you are a young coach that makes it work in Detroit, even if making it work only means a decent season due to the lowered expectations there, chances are in your favor that you can pretty much write your ticket in the coaching world after that.

I think most NFL people would love to have the Detroit job, as it offers rare job security in the NFL. Ford is hands off and known for being loyal to a fault. He gave Matt Millen 8.5 seasons to turn it around. They've also spent a ton on new of top of the line team facilities.
