I think at least part of the reason Carr took a pay cut is to keep the door wide open to stay beyond this season.

He seems to love it in Dallas and is a valuable player. Not his fault we drastically overpaid him.

So the thing with Dunbar, I see him making the squad but starting the year on PUP, thus not taking a roster spot. Jackson really has no chance, even if he replaces Dunbar, he would still be the 4th RB on the roster. Tough to do that for a player who is completely unproven. I see him on the practice squad, especially with Dunbar still in there.

Special Teams

Dunbar doesn't do that one thing..... Jackson will & excel. He's just as good coming out of the back field

I'd have improved the defense in a more direct way, by going defense in the first three rounds, then Dixon in the 4th.

Elliott gives them a face for the franchise after Romo's gone.

I'm still not sure why people don't see that this impacts the defense MORE than any individual defensive player. There are 11 players on defense working together as a team. Filling a whole in one of these positions, especially a corner or safety, makes the least impact.

Getting a running back who can revolutionize your offense and vastly decrease the pressure on defense, makes a much larger direct impact.

It bothers me even more given that we saw the exact example of this in 2014.

If the idea is to win with Romo, I don't see the difference between Murray and Dixon, especially behind an OL that will be even better in 2016 than in 2014.

Now, it you project that to 2020, when we're not as sure what the OL will look like, and we have no idea what QB will be like, in that context Elliott makes more sense.

You make it sound like there is a maximum attainable performance from a running back behind this offensive line and that the quality of the back makes no difference in the result. With Elliott, Romo is safe on 3 downs and he can hand the rock in any situation and expect to get positive yards. Elliott also doesn't have a fumbling problem like Murray did. Much more dynamic runner than Murray with better vision.

I actually think you sold Jackson way short....with Dunbar injured, his rehab problems, I see Jackson making the team with special teams play

It's a definite possibility.

Lance Dunbar will likely start the season on PUP, if he's still on the roster, which isn't a given. Dunbar offers value in the passing game when healthy, but the team has Cole Beasley, Lucky Whitehead and Ezekiel Elliott.

Dallas also didn't select Elliott fourth overall to sit and watch, which begs the question if two veteran runners are needed on the bench behind him.

Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris will probably be safe, but it bears watching.

If Darius Jackson shows up on special teams, he could make one of the vets inactive on game days, which would place their roster spot in the cross hairs.

Maybe one gets traded if another team suffers an injury during training camp/pre-season.

Any team that has a guard go down will surely inquire about Ronald Leary.

I think the fact that Dixon and Booker didn't go until the 4th shows that the scouts and teams saw a lot bigger difference in Elliott when compared to them.

Elliott was a great pick....and a ballsy pick. Jones is either gonna come out a big winner or a big loser....there will be no middle ground.

Have you seen our schedule? I think we have an excellent chance of going 4-0 next year. We almost beat the Giants last year with Cassel and Randle.

I don't know, this Giants team has been completely made over. We should beat them, but as in any divisional rival, it will be no cakewalk.

I think calling EE a huge upgrade over Murray is laughable. Murray set multiple franchise records his last year here. It will take EE a couple of years to hit his peak, and even then, he might not be as productive as Murray was in his final season. I like EE and think he is a good player, but expecting him to instantly come in and be better than Murray is setting him up for failure.

I would love to see Dunbar transitioned to a slot receiver and cut bait with Street. Street has been basically useless and we all saw what Dunbar can do when he gets the ball in his hands as a receiver. He could be a monster in 4 receiver sets with Witten & Zeke as added protection for Romo.

The only question is if and when. There's no timeline for his return and who's to say he comes back 100%. I would stash him on the PUP and see how it pans out. But if he returns to form I really think he has value in the receiving game.

With the all of the UDFA WR signings, I think one of them will knock Street off the roster.

I'm not afraid of any team in the division. It's a poor division and none of them really did anything to help themselves to the point that I would be concerned about them.

He didn't have leverage. The Cowboys could have held on to him until the day before the season started and released him. There would be no money out there for him.

He took the pay cut because his future here was unclear.

The Cowboys weren't taking that Cap hit on Carr. He took the payout because his future here was unclear but he wanted to be here.

Is that why he signed an extension? Wait... he didn't... If he had leverage, he would have leveraged it into more years.

For the average team, there likely would be a big difference. With this OL, probably not quite so much. McFadden's 2015 totals project to 1,300 yards as a starter over the season, and that was with no passing threat.

Being an old-timer, does anybody know what Gil Brandt thinks of our draft/players? Don't know if he writes for anybody. Can anyone help?...

I'm saying he had leverage in regards to this year. Next year no so much. But the Cowboys didn't want to take that cap hit by cutting him. They made that very clear. That's not to say that they wouldn't have but it would've hurt them to do so. Carr took a pay cut but still probably will get paid more than eh would've on the open market. Win/win for both sides.

If he had any leverage for this year, he would have used that leverage to gain security for future years. He didn't, because he didn't have any leverage.

Agreed. Dunbar would make for an excellent slot receiver.
