Of Jason Garrett’s options, status quo may be the worst

Black Monday was a slaughter in the NFL. A day after the season ended, head coaching heads were chopped left and right.

Then there’s Jason Garrett. He remained stuck in the middle. Stuck in the middle of the Valley Ranch muck. Stuck with Jerry.

Mr. Jones didn’t fire Garrett.

But he verbally insulted his head coach.

The Jerry sound bite I heard on TV late Sunday evening, nearly an hour and a half after the 2013 goodbye loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, was ridiculous, even by normal Jones standards.

In what was supposed to be a positive explanation of why Garrett would be coming back next season, Jones actually said:

“We’ve put a lot of effort in training as a franchise into Jason Garrett, and I want to take advantage of that. If we don’t have him, we don’t get payback for all the miscues and losses and criticism of sideline management.

“We don’t get a chance to benefit from the way you learn, and that is the mistakes you make. So I want to have him around to learn.”

Holy hell. Jerry just reduced his head coach to ongoing intern status, which was not the first time he’s done it, but this was the strongest.

well hard to argue with the brutal truth of what Jerruh said.

It is still something you do not do to your head coach. It undermines him and does not help in any way. If Garrett had any self respect or pride, he would be furious.

But he's getting full fledged head coach salary while still being given the same leeway a trainee would get. Not a bad gig if you can put up with it.

Who would even think of hiring Jason Garrett? Nobody. So he takes it up the @$$. I would never say anything negative or disrespectful to my employees in public. It's a shame we're watching this debacle unfolding before our eyes. The ghost of Al Davis descends upon Jerry Jones.

Look..

..bottom line is the team is still rebuilding with or without Garrett as HC..

..and Jones is going to oversee that.

Period.

Like it or Not.

So the best we can hope for is that somehow..someway..we get some breaks with the injuries..

..we draft strongly and continue to improve (wouldn't be hard)..

..do another 8-8 and Garrett gets to leave before a new deal is signed for him.

Sounds easy pisie to me.

Galloway's just another Garrett fan. At least he used to admit it on his show unlike a lot of these local guys who pretend to be impartial.

Hey Randy, the reason Garrett doesn't quit like you recommend is 1) he doesn't have the stones for it and 2) he probably knows he can't, and won't, get another gig this good.

This is the DALLAS COWBOYS and we have an owner who has intentionally put in a place a "HC" he knows isn't qualified. I really don't want to hear another word about how Jerry is trying to win. Even beyond the entire GM issue, but if you are wanting to win you would hire the best HC you can find. But Jerry has someone in place he knows isn't a quality HC and someone who in year 4 is still just learning on the job.

And anyone wants to wonder why we can't make the playoffs. Like over the last 18 years all you have to do is look at the owner/gm. He's more interested in power, ego and money than he is about really trying to win.

i dont think it is stones
this is more about self respect

what self respecting person would want to be the lap dog of the owner?

apparantly garrett does becasue he has little self respect and also knows that he would not get another HC/OC job in the NFL

Unfortunately for Garrett, results next year are likely to be worse than this year. Sweeping the Giants and the Commanders again will be tough, and the Eagles look to be on the upswing. Romo could be affected by his back troubles, Ware will likely be feeling his age and free agency is a pipe dream given the salary cap situation. Hatcher (this year's best D-lineman) is likely gone, and who knows if Crawford or Bass will bounce back from injury or, if they do, actually be players of note. Lee is talented but can't stay healthy, and you might say the same for Murray, who is starting to run like Marion Barber (which is good in the short term but may mean a limited career path). Of course, there's always the draft. And while the Cowboys may not do worse than average in picking players who contribute, their razor-thin roster depth means they really have to be well above average-to-excellent in drafting. Which they historically tend not to be.

So JG should already be thinking about 2015 and what offensive coordinator job might be open for him and at what level. Cause 8-8 (or worse) next year is bound to translate into a pink slip and a headline on Black Monday 2014.

This entire thing goes back to Jimmy Johnson and his crew telling Jerry Jones that he will never win anything ever again and Jerry is unable to let that go. Sad.

This is 100% correct. This above money drives Jerry. Jerry has more money than he can ever spend, but with each passing year, more folks pile onto the "if it weren't for Jimmy, Cowboys wouldn't have won 3 SB's", the more Jerry is bound and determined to prove them wrong. As much as it pains me to see the Cowboys fail, the silver lining is, i think it's safe to say that Jerry will never see another SB in his lifetime, and thus he can never rid himself of Jimmy and that success.

It's really demeaning to Garrett to say he's been trained. Honestly, what NFL head coach is trained by ownership or a GM?

Like many things Jones says, it probably isn't what he really means, but wow does it sounds awful.

Don't the players hear this stuff?

They must & I'm sure they laugh.

I read all the time this player or that one saying they never read anything the media puts out but I have a hard time believing that.

I bet Jerry has scrapbooks of all his interviews. He must love reading all he's said. Nobody loves them some Jerry as much as Jerry.

When you are working for a football idiot, being fired or flat quitting was a better option for Garrett than the status quo
Wow he totally hates Jones. I'm not sure he's a total football idiot like Galoway suggests, he's just mediocre. We could be worse, we could be the Browns. IMO Jones gives Garrett and Romo one last run and that's it. One more all in with the same core and then he changes directions. What I get from e Jones interview is that he put up with the learning curve from Garrett and Romo and this upcoming season if he can restock the DL like he did the OL we should be OK. What Jerry fails to comprehend is that the talent on hand is mediocre to bad at best and it's going to take the 1991 draft all over again to put us over the top. That ain't happening in my humble opinion.

Does Garrett have no pride or self-respect?

My goodness, Jones talked about him as though he was at best a trusted house servant and at worst a child.

Garrett should quit this very day, suck it up and go become a coordinator some where or college, and someday try to come back to some NFL club as a HC.
