Last year Dallas struggled from a lack of field position. No turnovers, No kick/punt returns, No defensive 3 and outs....nothing seemed to ever give us drives starting near midfield or in our opponent’s territory. Game after game, it was Drive the ball 70-80 yards or don’t score. Washington beat the Eagles on Sunday with three TD drives of 45, 20, and 48 yards after two interceptions and a punt return. Those were the only TD’s they scored. Sunday night, our Cowboys had 4 first half possessions, starting on our 25, 20, 25, and 27. We scored 14 points. In the second half, our 6 possessions began on our 32, 25, 39, 35, 12, and 9. That’s 10 possessions with an average starting field position of our own 24.9. Those last two starting on our own 12 and 9 at crunch time are a huge challenge for a team with a struggling OL. New year; New defensive philosophy; same incredibly difficult field position which is hard to overcome. Hopefully, our day, month maybe, is coming when our offense gets a short field once or twice a game. Those can make all the difference, even if converted to FGs.
