I really into movies like the hobbit and LOTR and I read those books. I'm just curious about how good that show is and should I ask for season one on dvd for xmas?

The books are better than the HBO show, but the HBO show is pretty good. They necessarily had to simplify the story lines and remove some of the great dialogue, but the sex and the gore are still there, and they did a nice job casting the show, in my opinion. It's well-worth watching to anybody who's already read the books.

Yes, it is great. You should watch all 3 seasons that are available and read the books too.

I would go as far as to say it is the third best "fantasy" book series after Tolkien/Hobbit/LOTR and the original Robert E Howard Conan stories.

Definitely a great series, excellent casting. Would make a great gift. I agree with Idgit, read the books first if you can. Ask for both.

Really good show.
Books are better but they almost always are.

I have read the books twice each thus far.

Only really nasty thing is Martin writes SLLOOOOOWWWWW.

Reminds me quite a bit of the Wheel of Time series in excellence. depth and long time to market.

Seven books. Who knows how many seasons, ultimately, and if they'll ever be able to finish. At some point, HBO is going to catch up in the narrative, and Martin'll still be working on the last book, I imagine.

Game of Thrones is the second best show I've ever seen on TV, right behind Breaking Bad.

And the best book series ever written.

Has GRRM already said he'd end it at 7 books? Seems there's a whole lot of "wrapping up" to do in just 2 more books.

Yes he said 7 books.

But he originally said it was going to be a Trilogy.
Then he said 5 books before he had to split Feast for Crows and Dance With Dragons into 2 books. Now he says 7. So take it for what it's worth. As he likes to say "The Story grew in telling".

I have a hard time believing he'll ever finish it, honestly. The last book was longer, and, in my opinion, needed a lot of editing it didn't get. I think the juggernaut he's created here is pushing him to give birth before he's finished gestating, so to speak. The skeleton of a great story is there, and he obviously knows how to wrap up the main plot line, but all the secondary and tertiary details are taking on lives of their own, and he's have troubles pruning them or cutting them off where he should. The result is going to be messier than it'd have been if the guy took the next 20 years he probably wanted to finish everything off at his own pace.

Best show BY FAR on tv, now that Br Ba has ended of course. As a book reader I think the show has done an impeccable job with the source material. Even GRRM has stated the show has even done things BETTER. Top tier entertainment.

Ya I don't think there has ever been a TV show made that can rival GoT. Breaking Bad was amazing but even that falls far short of GoT if you ask me. Just absolutely incredible, and I think it is better than the Hobbit and LOTR.
