I have been deeply frustrated with the game planning lately. It seems almost as if the coaching staff doesn't understand the talent on this team. Or at the very least it doesn't seem that our playcalling is designed to attack the weakness of the opposing team.
If your going to play a team with a lousy run defense and a pretty good pass rush, you should dedicate yourself to the run. When you have slowed the pass rush down and then throw the ball off of playaction. Also, if your going to call playaction don't call it three times in a row and on obvious passing situations. Without a credible running threat you are only giving the advantage to the defense. The QB is forced to take his eyes off the defense while the pressure is closing in. It's just dumb because the defense is not fooled. Whoever called the plays against the eagles defense needs to brush up on common sense coaching 101. We simply played right into their hands.
On the defensive side of the ball if you are going to play straight up then you need superior talent. If you dont have physically superior talent then your scheme has to provide the advantage. We are lining up like we are the ravens or bears where the sheer physicality(I know that's not a word) of our defense is going to win enough one-on-one battles that we can win. With the loss of Greg Ellis this team has lost it's physical advantage both against the run and the pass.
I also feel the loss of Ellis has severely compromised Roy Williams ability to do to create havoc near the line of scrimmage. Teams are attacking Roy and taking their chances with the LB's. The coaching staff hasn't adapted to this at all. Watch how often a guard or tackle attacks Roy instead of going to pick up a LB. It's looking way too easy and our coaching staff seems to inept to fix it. We have talent, they are not being put in the best situations to succeed. Anyway thats my two cents.
