Garrett Likely Staying

I couldn't be happier. He'll shut the naysayers up in 2009 when he has a healthy Offense and a full off season to work with some of the new weapons.

Breakdown of why I believe he is staying.

With Shanahan wanting to take 2009 off I don't think Jerry is in any kind of hurry to change anything else on the coaching staff. That includes Wade, which I think was a possibility if Garrett left. Wade is still going to need a LB Coach when Herring officially accepts the Oklahoma State DC job.

Candidates? I think Jim Bates might be.

The Jets look like they are going to go Rex Ryan. They didn't interview Garrett anyway, so it wasn't a likely destination. They may still go Steve Spanuolo, but like Garrett, he is very highly paid and I think that makes him harder to hire. Both will want pay rasies from their current salaries.

The Rams are leaning towards Leslie Frazier. Spagnuolo may also be a candidate. I think that is a really good hire BTW. This is the last place Garrett could land and at this point I think it is highly unlikely he will.

The Colts, Seahawks, Lions, Browns, 49ers, and Broncos all have their guy in place.

That leaves the Raiders and the Chiefs if Pioli changes his mind. What can you say about the Raiders? What a friggin' mess. Last year when Al Davis wanted Lane Kiffin to resign he was going to make Charlie Joiner his Head Coach. He hired Joiner anyway and put him on Kiffin's staff. Now he has fired Joiner and isn't retianing Cable and is losing his entire coaching staff.

No way Garrett would take that job. Their only hope is to get a retread guy from the good old boy network like Jim Fassel and try again.

Commitment to Excellence? Naw. Commitment to Excrement. That is the saddest franchise in the NFL at this point and at one time they were one of the flagships. Sad really. Davis needs to retire. One of the great football minds ever, but it is gone now.

Largely agree, but I'll modify slightly.

Garrett is only officially a candidate for STL at this point and reportedly its Frazier, then Sags, then the rest. Remaining openings, Jets & Oakland (KC?) have shown no interest in Garrett at this point.

So yeah, it looks like Garrett is in-line to stay. If so, there may still be plenty of drama to play out. Can Garrett and TO productively co-exist now? All things considered I have my doubts.

If Garrett walks away over TO I could see Shanahan very quickly entering the picture. I think Shanny's "sit out" for 2009 is not hard and fast. I think he'd be very interested in coming here if given the right opportunity.

More amazing when people blame a guy who doesn't suit up and play at all.

I think you're right on. No one else wants him.

The 'healthy offense' line again? Sorry, but he had more talent to work with than anyone else in the league. Lack of production is on him. But I do hope he shuts up the naysayers.

I think the main reason he's staying is that no other team wants him.

Seriously, Hos. Why would ANYONE who was even remotely qualified to be a HC even THINK about accepting that job under Davis? He's proven time and time again that he's 90% out of his mind!

Jay Glazer was on with Mike Francesa a few minutes ago and he thought Garrett would leave and that Wade would move to DC and that it was independent of Garrett getting HC job.

Man, I don't know. The reason I say Fassel is because I think he has openly campaigned for that job. If it were up to me to find a coach there it would honestly have to be someone like Marty Schottenheimer who can rebuild the image. He may never take them to the promised land, but right now they need credibility.

That team is a joke and they used to be one of the flagships of the NFL.

I dont see why not, sure there are riffs between them but just like any place there isn't going to be a perfect comrodery all through out the organization

If Garrett can't be blamed then he can't be credited; and if he's that insignificant then why are you so giddy about him coming back? Sorry man, calling your propaganda out is too easy.

P.S. If you repLy with more propaganda and I don't reply BACK then you can just go haead and call me a lazy bum.

So you're saying that for the most part, coaches are inconsequential?

Did he say any more? Why he thinks this? Was it his guess, or did it sound like he had inside info?

There was no chance T.O. was going anywhere anyway, it was all baseless speculations sparked by Ed Werder.

On a similar subject, Mortensen was speculating about the same thing last night and said that although he didn't have proof, he had a feeling that if Garrett did leave that Shanahan would move in as head coach (not sure if he mentioned Wade sliding to DC or not).

Mort & Jay are on this kick now. Francessa was talking since the other day like it's inevitable. We can only hope :)
