The pursuit of Jason Garrett began Friday in Texas as Atlanta owner Arthur Blank and his entourage, which includes demoted general manager Rich McKay and assistant general manager Billy Devaney, among others, interviewed the talented Cowboys offensive coordinator in Dallas Garrett is also on the Baltimore Ravens' radar, though they also want to make a run at CBS analyst Bill Cowher. Both the Falcons and Ravens have already interviewed Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.
"Everything we heard about Jim was right on the money. He's a classy guy," said one Atlanta executive.
Blank, who is conducting an unusual dual search for a new head coach and a new general manager, also met with Cowboys offensive line coach Tony Sparano, who is considered a front-runner with former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells in Miami. Sparano, who is a northeast guy like Parcells, called the plays last season for the Cowboys.
No one is quite sure what Garrett's answer is going to be if he is offered the job in Atlanta. Many NFL people believe Garrett, who is only 42, may bide his time waiting on possibly landing the Dallas job in the future or the New York Giants job, should it ever become available. Garrett is from New Jersey and he and his brothers, all NFL coaches, played at Princeton.
Blank also plans to interview Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and Jacksonville defensive coordinator Mike Smith.
Romeo Crennel has denied any interest in the vacant Miami job, although his name has been linked to the position for two weeks. And why would the Browns allow Crennel to leave? If they could get Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who is one of Browns GM Phil Savage's closest friends.
Savage, remember, didn't hire Crennel. Owner Randy Lerner did while promising Savage that if Crennel failed, he could hire the next Cleveland coach. Well, Crennel has turned things around in Cleveland with a 10-win season, although his team did miss the playoffs.
