Weeden fits the same mold as Orton, be there to back up if needed, but put no pressure on Tony.

That's important.

What I took from this was not so much that Weeden was going to be developed as the QB of the future, but that with Romo still in the fold and expected to be the QB for the foreseeable future they didn't want to draft a young guy and develop him for a couple of years so he could go and be productive for another team.

Yep. He buys us coverage for a year or two, and we can develop a younger player then. With the improved OL and the high profile, Dallas is actually a really good landing spot for Weeden. As a transitional player (if anything happened to Tony), he'd get quality snaps with a good team and either shine and get an extension (I know what everybody thinks of that, but it's on in a case where he really shines in relief) or he keeps the seat warm while we scramble to get a young guy ready.

Otherwise, he does a couple years here, hopes to look good and get an off chance at a starting job on a bad team after, and we have an interim solution until we're actually ready to pull the trigger on a high pick to replace Tony. Makes a lot of sense for everybody, and the only complicating factor is Orton's apparent indecision.

I find it funny all the jokes about Weeden's age considering arguably the greatest QB in Cowboys history was a 27 year old rookie. Now I am not saying Weeden is a NFL starting caliber QB but I do laugh at the age naysayers

The obvious difference is Weeden has been in the NFL a few years and been very average. Staubach came to the NFL late, but once there it didn't take years for him to develop.

Weden was a questionable prospect coming out of college, did some good things at osu, but has plenty of question marks. Everyone knew how good staubach was going to be.

I'm doing my best to gauge the context of the article. Garrett has to be saying he's developing Weeden to be the backup for years to come.

Weeden has been in the league 2 years. Roger went to a team who was competing for championships and SB before he ever set foot at the facilities. Weeden went to the cleveland browns.

I agree. He's the perfect guy to replace Orton and back up Tony's final years. Romo could throw 5 interceptions in a row and no one would ever chant Weeden's name.

Well, that isn't completely true, which is why he wasn't drafted until the 10th round. If nothing else, the fact that Staubach was going to have to sit out for 4 years raised some question marks regarding rust etc., but also in college he relied a lot on his feet so his ability to settle in as primarily a drop back passer remained to be seen.

And that's a fair point, but I'm really talking about perception, and that it's natural that a couple of years of NFL mediocrity is going to color how people view Weeden.

I wish he would stop saying things like Romo is "young" and "in his prime" and Weeden is "developmental" it just reinforces the notion he's in over his head.

There's a reason Weeden signed for the minimum and no guaranteed money and it has nothing to do with him being a good prospect.

Preception like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Weeden has struggled and has something he must improve on. Physical skills he has that, really the big knock on him coming out of college was age but yet was still seen as a high 1st rd to 2nd rd pick. He goes to a team that has been very poor for a while now not exactly condusive for an inexperianced QB. I'm not going to say Weeden will become a great QB I don't know what Weeden will do or not. I think he has a chance to improve with a better cast of weapons around him in Dallas as opposed to what he had in Cleveland.

As for Roger he went to a contending team a team who was playing for championships with Meredith and made it to the SB with Morton so it was a bit easier given the cast of talent that was around him and even at that Landry was not quick to put Roger in there heck we bounced for a good while with Morton and Stauback.

I didn't take it any other way than that. I don't think the team sees him as a franchise guy. It'd be nice if the team goes QB early next year.
