If you feel this way, then the only reason you're not bashing the guy is because of the 12-4, and not because your opinion changed. He didn't cost us the playoffs for three straight years. He got blamed for a team that was not good enough to make the playoffs in the first place not making the playoffs for three straight years. That's what happens when you inherit a 1 win team and have no resources. But just like I kept saying during those 8-8 seasons, you don't always judge a coach by his teams wins and losses. Sometimes it's a good job of coaching that gets a team to .500.

I understand that a lot of you guys just never saw it coming. And that now the choices are to pretend that it wasn't happening after all or that it happened for some other reason, but the reality is that JG has been rebuilding this team the right way since 2010. He's been saying and doing the right things, and, while he's made his share of mistakes, the trend as been overwhelmingly positive. Now, NFL seasons are long, and a lot can happen to derail what we've been putting together. We'll see if he can keep it going, but there's no doubt he's put us in position to make a run and he deserves the credit for his part in that.

Look, when a team misses the playoffs for three straight seasons by one game and the coach cost the team at least two games a season with stupid game/clock management mistakes then the coach is to blame for the team missing the playoffs. It is really that simple. You can't rewrite history. I am looking forward to next season as Garrett may finally be getting it but please quit trying to sugar coat history. The jury is till out on Garrett and next season will go a long way towards showing what type of coach he will be in the future but the past is history and can't be rewritten no matter how much you like the guy.

What was stopping the team from drafting the OL while retaining some of the vets during that first 8-8 season (Gurode mainly)? Would have protected your franchise QB more than journeymen centers. It took 4 years and 3 first round picks to rebuild the OL. It surely wasn't a point of emphasis every off season or more OL would have been brought in/drafted. I love the OL, but a rebuild doesn't generally take 4 seasons and require all the added pieces to come from premium draft picks.

this one did and Im happy
sorry your not

Make up your mind in one post you claim "It says a lot about Will Clay, Jerry, and Stephen" and then this one Garrett first rebuild was a disaster. So is that to say if something does not work it is Garrett who is to blame but if players pan out then it now is Will Clay (McClay) , Stephen and Jerry?

I believe they drafted Tyrone Smith, Murray that year. So no issues with the draft. Not sure when Will Clay got here, but it was that year or one year after. None the less, I like the thought process of Garrett wanting to redo the line. But those decisions he made in the first year of getting rid of solid veterans for undrafted FA's was horrid. All but ruined that entire season. Who was that sap he kept touting at center for us? Wasnt that also the year that he let Murray rot on the bench until injuries forced him to start him? I believe Murray had like 180 yards rushing that day?

Personnel, strategy, game day management, play calling, Garrett is one of the worst I have EVER seen. I think Jerry finally has it right. If Garrett HAS to be the coach, get him away from the offense, get him away from the defense, away from game day management, away from player analysis and let him be the politician/fanny patter/pom pom waver/coach speak giver/likeable walk around guy. That is what he actually does well.

But you need great coordinators around Garrett. Coordinators that Garrett can trust not to meddle with.

Johnson felt from the get go that being the HC is a full time job and acting as both OC and HC would be a mistake. Play calling does not make you a HC hell Jimmy never called plays he had Dave Shula when that was not working Norv Turner was hired. He for the most part brought his entire staff from the Hurricaines to Dallas including DC Dave Wannstead. As for solid vets Garrett was getting rid of? Like who? we had a lot me guys who could care less about the overall team and Garrett weeded these guys from the roster. As for his role as OC Dallas still ranked in the top half of the league. While I did not agree with every call made I can honestly say I don't agree with every call other coaches have made either.

You are right you need great coordinators even guys like Bill Belicheck knows this and has put great coaches on his staff it is what you do if you expect to win. it is not some 1 man show but I seriously doubt you get that.

Jimmy ran the entire team, made trades, did the draft, picked the OC's, ect...ect.... He was the football mind.

Jerry made a monster mistake having Garrett do the OC and the head coaching job. And he admitted that. Thats exactly why he stripped Garrett of the OC duty. A stripping that Garrett did NOT like.

We also saw Garrett butcher the offense under Wade. Every year we ran the ball less and passed the ball more under Garrett.

Gorude comes to mind as a solid veteran. Not against getting rid of aging vets, but you need quality to replace them. Not cast off FA or undrafted players.

I think Garrett has found his stride. I still wouldnt want him as a head coach or any coach, but if you have strong coordinators and keep him away from game day, then he can focus on what he does best. Pat fannies, get everyone on the same page, and make everyone like him. But you have to have talent, and you have to win. He is a great front runner.

Wade as HC at anytime could have changed what we were doing just as Garrett did when he did not like the calls coming from Callahan. Garrett picked Linehan a coach he knew very well and worked with. Garrett never stated that he was opposed to having someone else call plays, people spin that crap around here as if it is fact and yet it is more of an opinion than a fact.

Lastly Wade was here for 2007 to 2010 and in that time Dallas offense ranked 2007 3rd, 2008 13th, 2009 2nd and 2010 7th. so save the BS

Happy with the results as I said. Just clarifying what rebuilding an OL from the floor up entails; not waiting for 4 seasons to exclusively use premium draft picks. That is allocating valuable resources as they bc available (no direct plan/scouting/finding later picks/Leary was a special circumstance due to his knee condition/FAs). I love the OL, just not into revisionist history, etc. (I feel you though, why complain about what the great results are today? and you have a point there too)

It would be that simple if that's what happened, but that's not what happened. There's no point going round and round about it.

As for the jury being out, that question was answered when he got the 5/$30M extension. The jury is not out. You just don't like the verdict.

I agree but I would say the jury is out on how Jason will be viewed. I think this is a big season for Jason as a HC, he has to show his team can be consistent in winning. Having a great year and following it up with a poor season in which you fail to make post season will only intensify the scrutiny and often times starts putting doubts in the minds of the players. Wade Phillips is a perfect example, very good DC but as HC his teams tended to rise and fall never consistently producing and would eventually lose his player confidence.

Any team with Romo at QB and throwing the ball 70% of the time with the receivers we had is going to have a high octane offense. We didnt need Garrett for that. As Garrett got more into the offense, we got more pass happy, more one dimensional, and the run game got worse and worse until it finally bottomed out 2 years ago in both yards and attempts.

And LOW AND BEHOLD..............the FIRST year that Garrett doesnt call the offense we are at the top of the league in rushing? Cmon, you cut the BS. Waaaay too much coincidence there. No chance that the addition of last years first round guard was the missing ingredient to take us from worst to first in rushing.

As far as Wade, he was a defensive guy. Didnt meddle in the offense any more then Garrett meddles in the defense now.

And you brought up a good point. Garrett did hand pick Linehan. Jerry forced him to do so. And hell yes he didnt want to give it up. He fought that big time. Even took it back from Callahan half way through the year. That is EXACTLY why jones finally let him pick someone. He probably told him to pick a guy that you trust, because there is no way you are doing it anymore.

And Wade NEVER got the chance to pick his own OC. You can bet that if he did, he wouldnt have picked Garrett. LOL

Who knows, maybe we win a SB with a real OC not fumbling up the play calling under Wade.

I dont see in revisionist history it took what it took fours years of first round talent I dont care.
We have one of the best youngest offensive lines in the NFL? Not good for you too many #1 draft picks too many years OK
Iam happy and riding the star

Yes having 3 1st rd picks on the line even Garrett told Linehan he wanted to run it. Heck when Linehan was hired people here were complaining it was going to be the same thing since Det was not running the ball and Linehan himself when he was hired said Garrett stressed the running game to him. Garrett did take over duties from Callahan as a HC he should have if he did not like it just as Jimmy did not like the job Shula was doing.

Garrett has put this team in a position to now contend he was weeded out players and has been a major part of rebuilding this team and it is paying off so deny him.

he fought it big time? lol yeah where do you see he fought it? believe as you choose just be decent enough to either blame him for bad and credit for good instead claiming he failed to rebuild it and now it is Jerry, Stephen and McClay. It seem pretty pathetic to only dish out blame for all you don't like and to credit others of things you do like.

The jury is out to see if Jerry made a mistake. You do realize he has only had one winning season don't you???? Look, I have absolutely nothing against Garrett other than we did not have time for his OJT when we already had a superstar QB. You think we missed the playoffs those three seasons due to bad defense and that was part of the problem but Garrett made coaching mistakes in at least two games a season during that span that cost us wins and thus the playoffs. The problem was we already had the most important piece in Romo and Garrett blew games with dumb mistakes. If Garrett is the type of coach that he has to have an all-star caliber player at most positions to win then he doesn't really offer much as a coach as most coaches do well with a lot of talent. This is my last post on the subject at least in this thread. I have not posted anything negative about Garrett in quite a while but I get a little aggravated when someone tries to rewrite history I just saw with my own two eyes. This isn't the first time we have had this debate but I guess we can at least agree we both love the Cowboys. I know you will have to have the last word.PEACE my friend!!!!;)
