Garrett vs Payton

I think Garrett is trying to be like Payton. IMO, i think Payton relates better to his players, builds a better game plan and manages the clock better. Payton has plenty of skins on the wall and is gutsy enough to try a surprise onside kick in the Super Bowl. Garrett instead seems afraid to risk anything and does a poor job of confronting refs with bad calls.

Garrett does create very good structure and pays attention to detail. His offenses always seem to put up alot of yards.

Maybe one day Garrett can grow to be comparable to Payton, as of right now, i don’t see it.

Any hint of criticism towards Garrett gets a childish reaction from certain posters on this board. Who is the better coach? Well, so far its Payton. Can JG be better than Payton? Maybe. Throw Harbaugh in the mix and things change in my opinion. I would take Harbaugh over Garrett and Payton every day of the week and twice on Sundays..

Which Harbaugh? Though it really should not matter as neither of them has his skins on the wall either.

I like Payton. Great coach, but I too see some young coaches like Garrett and the Harbaugh brothers who are just as promising.

Honestly those who are most snide about Garrett would be pimping him if the roles were reversed. But since he is in Dallas, they whine and call it objectivity.

Jim...I think he is a really good coach. He turned that team around and made Alex Smith a decent QB after years of underperforming.

I like them both as well. But as I said neither have Payton's resume either, but no one will troll your opinion because he doesn't coach here.

Good coach. Can understand why you are impressed.

Really is true. He isn't suspended for a year over an illegal incentive program. He lives in the town where he is employed, though Payton likely will too now that his wife has filed for divorce. Garrett did not take the first HC job he was ever offered and seems to have climbed the ladder faster from when both got on it.

Good point.

Edit...also no accusations of stolen prescriptions.

Let's ignore that Lombardi Trophy that is sitting in the Saints office because of him. I think Payton is a better head coach and better playcaller.

Yeah Garrett never should have had that playing career last so long, and we all know coaches exit with the same number of years. On top of this Payton is suspended, under a couple of other suspicions and in the throes of a divorce. He won't burn out.

That sure is a lot of assumptions in the projections. Fact is Payton has had undeniable success in the first 6 years.

Arguably, Payton works for a franchise that SHOULD be behind Dallas in talent from a FA/money standpoint. They both started with a decent core team.

Who is to say Garrett doesn't decide to run for elected office in 3 years?

I think Payton has a track record for 6 years that will be a benchmark for Garrett after his first 6 years.

Possible Burnout, divorce, etc really is complete opinion and supposition

Sean Payton first became a coordinator in the NFL in 2000 with the NY giants. He continued to be a coordinator in Dallas for 3 more years.

6 years of experience calling games. Also in his first go around he was kicked off the Giants and with the cowboys several people wanted him gone.
He then went to New Orleans where he continued to call plays for 3 more years before winning a super bowl and went through a 7-9 season where the team struggled.

9 years of calling plays and experience. IN his 10th year he continued to excel.

Malcolm Gladwells OUtliers. 10 years to master something. Doesnt mean you wont be successful before 10 years. But you will still need more experience and practice before you can get to where those masters are.

Jason Garrett is now in his 6th year of calling plays.

I think we need to chill out about comparing the two. I think we can all see where JG has improved and it is getting better and better.

Stick with it. Its only his 3rd year as a head coach too. Based on his success it is evident he can become even better. but there will be down years.
I think this is pretty accurate. Garrett is a coaching neophyte compared to some of these other guys. There are going to be some lumps as he learns (as we saw last year). I really wish they had brought on a vet influence earlier. I'm not sure who screwed up that Dan Reeves thing, but he would have been an invaluable mentor to Garrett.

As it is, Payton is definitely the more accomplished coach and it isn't even close. It will be interesting to see how their careers progress though.

Let's let Garrett actually get a team into the playoffs before comparing him to Payton or even Harbaugh. Right now, he's playing catch up to those guys.

I guess what im saying is...they are both offensive minded coaches, do they have similiar offensive coaching styles? do they run a different scheme than each other? its not about who will have the better coaching career.

I think they are different offenses. From what I've read, Payton's is a mish mash of offensive philosophies but combining a lot of the WCO with the Coryell offense. He spent his formative coaching years with Gruden in a WC scheme.

I think Garrett is still mainly based off the Coryell offense (Norv, Zampese). However, I'm sure he also implements things from other offenses as well. Callahan was a WC guy under Gruden as well and I thought I saw more of those types of things in the Giants game.

Garrett was a back up QB in NY when Payton was the OC there, so I'm sure he's very familiar with the things Payton does and implements some of them. I think they all steal from each other these days.

:laugh2:

You did a "projecting out" assuming both guys will coach 10 to 12 more years, but if I add any caveats it is merely "a lot of assumptions?"

Okay man, rock on Amadeus.

Yeah, projecting each coach (in mid/late 40s) coaching 10-12 more years is the same as assuming one quits due to divorce

There is a difference between educated guess and pulling wishes out of dark places

For a smart guy, that is a smh moment.

you win.

What are the chances any of the people pimping Payton the hardest in this thread were slamming him when he worked in Dallas?

Incompetent coaches dont win SBs ... Sean Payton is a great coach. And virtually every year payton has been a head coach the saints have been playoff contenders.

Not sure how you could slam him, as Parcells firmly had his boot up his *** when he was here.

I guarantee Payton won't win a single game as the Saints head coach this year.
