Gary took a pay cut

Sack numbers are an afterthought for Jerry. The fact that he's willing to work for less gets him all in a lather.

Some just saw it as a replacement for Clowney, assumed because it was leaked he would be cut and not worth sending any compensation, plus his name isn't Maxx.

I personally liked the move and seeing what some of these edge guys got on the open market, I think his contract is pretty reasonable comparatively. Without a trade there would be no guarantee he signs here. Also it's rare you find a pass rusher in the 4th round that will be able to contribute as much as Gary out of the gates.
He is a better fit that Clowney in this defense. We traded for him bc his contract is a bargain relative to the DE market. If he got cut as rumored, we might have had to outbid other teams and sign him to a contract inflated by the market.

Exactly right......nobody know what it means but the hearty people of 17th century Ireland

Erin go bragh-less
:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

What is this, 3 paycuts in one offseason?
This will only embolden Stephen to be even cheaper.
if I can get him to take a pay cut, imagine what I could do to 8 other free agents!!! I could get them all for 1.9 million!!!!!!!!!! lol

Its wild how many people dislike this move. Years of disappointment have made this fanbase jaded. While id still like to see more and it's draft dependant weve had a really solid off season imo.
They gave up a 4th rounder for a guy who was going to be released, in order to save a few bucks. SJ talked in one interview how draft picks are precious 4th round and higher, that they don't get cheap til you get to the 5th round. Then he and the old man throw 4th rounders out with the garbage.

The clowns in charge said they were "busting the budget", they're 19th in FA spending. Their big $ move is trading for a guy who's been, at best, a slightly above average player the last few years. Slightly above average is better than what we had last year, but it's far from busting any budget.

Idk this is where I think we are overvaluing Gary a bit….if a player thought he could get more on the open market then why would he agree to a pay cut? So I understand that he probably secured some additional guaranteed money in exchange for the pay “cut”, but most likely that $16mAAV is around what Gary and his agent think they would have been. $16m per is what Kwity Paye received….id probably rather have Gary at the same price point but I could see where the league would view those two similarly.

Not that wild to me. He was completely nonexistent the 2nd half of the season last year to the point the coaches in Green Bay began to question his effort.

And he's essentially replacing a player in Clowney who just played better and better as the year went on. 8.5 sacks and not even on the team in September.
He also led the team with 12 TFLs. Crazy. But Gary is just a longer-term option. Not saying they shouldn't bring back Clowney maybe for third down work. I expect Gary to be better in 3-4, where he had his better seasons, he won't be beat up so much at OLB vs. DE or DT. If he can just keep his damn pad level down when he gets tired.

There’s a lot of haters here who dislike anything the Cowboys do so not surprising at all. Sad that there are so many bad people out there, but not surprising.

Right...and the OLB/edge market is going crazy right now. I'm afraid that this trend will continue. These guys just seem to get stronger and faster as we go along. Everybody wants that dawg coming off the edge.

Well unless they sign Pickens and Aubrey they are getting close to the end on the spending. Restructuring Quinnen Williams is the last of the big contracts that you would prudently want to redo. Beyond that there is Bland and Ferguson...but if you want to move on from them in 27' then restructuring isn't wise. The Q Will restructure gives you around 15 million. 20 million under at the moment but figure 15 million for the draft class? Leaves you just 5 million + 15 from the Williams restructure...so ~20 million is what you are left with for any additional acquisitions. You can get an additional 15 million or so from doing the deals with Pickens and Aubrey. So potentially up to 35 million if you get those deals done. Absent that, you are getting near the end of what is prudent and practical.

Gary is apparently not a gambler. He would rather have 13M in his pocket today than shove off into the great unknown of free agency.

He disappeared long before Micah got injured.
He was also in his last season as a Packer the moment Micah signed. And anything you hear from his previous team can be taken with a grain of salt. He is a quality player. Not a superstar. But this defense needs to increase quality at all levels so it can make a jump. But this was never a one off season fix. We have to take a macro view of the moves they make instead of taking a microscope to each individual player.
