Sources: Packers won't release Favre

by Jay Glazer

Jay Glazer is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com on MSN and also appears every week on FOX NFL Sunday as the network's NFL Insider.

It seems that Brett Favre isn't getting his way in Green Bay anymore.

The Packers legend asked the team for his unconditional release on Friday, but the organization has no intention of granting that request, FOXSports.com has learned. If anything, sources say, the team is prepared to welcome Favre back as a backup to Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers has worked as the team's starter for the last five months and Green Bay has been operating under that assumption since Favre announced his retirement in the beginning of March. Favre re-affirmed his decision to retire at the end of March.
"The finality of (Favre's) decision to retire was accepted by the organization," the team said in a statement released Friday. "At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."
Green Bay would likely trade Favre before releasing him, sources indicate. The team has the cap space to take on Favre's huge salary, but it would rather deal him than give him up for nothing, if those were the two options.
Friday's letter asking for his release is just the latest in what has been quite a soap opera involving Favre and the team this offseason.
As word of his desire to play leaked out, the team has treated the news largely as hearsay, as this is not the first time this offseason that Favre has made such a request. In late March during the NFL Owners Meeting, Favre informed the team he wanted to play again, multiple sources have told FOXSports.com. Not only did he insist he was returning, both head coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson agreed that he still had something left and they would welcome him back. Despite the fact that those close to Favre have stated Thompson did not want Favre back, Thompson was the deciding factor in agreeing it was not too late to have him un-retire at that time and start for the Packers in 2008.

In fact, team brass went as far as chartering a jet to fly to Mississippi to make it official later that week. The agreement was that the NFL's all-time leading passer would return for the year but help make it easier and palatable for Rodgers, who would have to wait another season to take the helm.
The group was set for this huge move when Favre suddenly phoned the team two days before the meeting was to take place and informed McCarthy that he had changed his mind yet again and was staying retired. While team officials were stunned by Favre's reversal, they made the decision to move on and draft his replacement, a move that Favre at the time understood. The Packers selected two quarterbacks in April's draft, Louisville's Brian Brohm in the 2nd round and LSU's Matt Flynn in the 7th round.
Then, a few weeks ago, Favre phoned the team stating he had that "itch" again to play. However, since he had jilted the Packers in March, the team simply took his latest request with a grain of salt. In addition, the team has put considerable time and attention into making Rodgers comfortable as the heir apparent. The bottom line at this point is the soap opera is unfortunately growing and likely won't die any time soon.

Good for them. "You play for us or no one." And he can't file a grievance with the league because they own his rights lock, stock and barrel.

Be funny, if GB takes him back, then make him a backup to Rodgers.:laugh2:

I see both sides to this equation and I suppose it seems more weighted in the teams favor. But GB better be careful. Favre is a Golden Goose and he'll be a lot less stained than GB in this, IMO. It seems if they don't want this guy they should release him from a political standpoint. They will lose if they muck around with this guy. Nothing wrong with trying to get something for him but they better be certain to make it look like they want nothing but the best for the guy. I don't agree with it being that way but I think that's the way it is.

FAVRE WAFFLED ON RETIREMENT IN MARCH
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 11, 2008, 6:11 p.m.
Brett Favre began to have second thoughts about his decision to retire within weeks of the tearful announcement that he was leaving, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting.

According to Glazer, Favre told the team he wanted to play again at the NFL owners’ meeting in late March, and General Manager Ted Thompson agreed at the time that Favre had something left and would be welcome to return. The Packers even chartered a jet to fly to Mississippi to make an official announcement.

And then, Glazer reports, Favre changed his mind again — and told the team to cancel the un-retirement, because he was going to stay retired.

At that point, Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy decided that Aaron Rodgers would be the team’s starter and that they would draft a quarterback to serve as Rodgers’ backup.

According to Glazer, the Packers’ brass is now steadfast that Rodgers will be the starter, and if Favre asks to be taken off the reserve-retired list, the Packers will welcome Favre back — as Rodgers’ backup.

PACKERS: WE’VE MOVED FORWARD
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 11, 2008, 5:17 p.m.

Two hours after ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Brett Favre had asked the Packers for his release, the team released a statement on the story.

The Packers’ statement opens by stressing that it was Favre’s decision to retire, and even says “we wanted him to return and welcomed him back.”

But the statement also says “the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.” Although the Packers don’t come right out and say it, the “move forward” language implies that the team would no longer welcome Favre back.

The statement acknowledges that Favre has the right to ask to be reinstated, and it says that if he does, “he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers.”

That, however, doesn’t mean he’d stay an active member of the Green Bay Packers. And the terse tone of the statement suggests that the team doesn’t want Favre to be an active member of the Green Bay Packers this year.

The full statement is below:
The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre.

Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion.

Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.

The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.

As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team.

As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions.

Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family.

I wouldn't assume that Green Bay fans are just going to blindly take Favre's side in a PR battle. From what I've read on most of the Green Bay boards, most of the fans are taking Thompson/McCarthy's side. Thompson and McCarthy are held in very high esteem by their fans, and for good reason. They took the youngest team in the NFL to the NFC Championship game, and they currently have the league's lowest cap number. Also, Green Bay is a storied franchise with a long history, and no one player is going to be considered bigger than the overall good of the franchise by their fans.

The NFL needs to change how players retire, with respect to allowing the player to come back right away. If a player retires, he must sit for that year, IMO.

You know me, I hate to be cynical ..

.. but does anyone else suspect that his original retirement announcement was one big ruse to get away from the Packers? After all, he's asked for his release, not to be welcomed back by his old team and the legions of fans who adore him. Sounds fishy.

I bet that's exactly what happens.

Actually, I bet Tampa Bay. Gruden has never found a washed up WCO QB he didn't like. He'll offer a late round pick to GB in a trade (He traded for Jake Plummer, after all). Green Bay will get rid of their headache, make sure he doesn't go to Minnesota or Chicago, get something modest in return and get his salary off the cap.
