Geno Smith scenario and the Cowboys

Let's say Geno Smith falls to #18, which is certainly possible. A team such as the Jaguars or Browns call the Cowboys, and want to trade up for Geno. They offer:

Their 2nd round pick AND next year's 1st round pick

in exchange for:

#18 overall pick

If that next year's 1st ends up being Teddy Bridgewater or Clowney, it's a no-brainer for me. We could probably still get Eric Reid or Larry Warford in the 2nd round and have high hopes for next year.

Would really like to get everyone's thoughts on this!

We've done it before a couple of times when we were at 22 (Quinn, Losman). Interesting to see what we'd do at 18. I'd like to see us get another pick this year as well if we trade all the way back to the second. Not sure on the points, but that should net another 4th/5th rounder this year.

Geno Smith wont last till 18, but yes I would trade for 2 this and 1 next in a second.

Regardless I'd take it even if we picked at same spot next year. Everything I've read is this is a weak draft up front but next year is the opposite. I'd do it and cash in on a more talented front end next year

Really like the comments above.

Teams get desperate for possible franchise QB's. If Geno gets past Buffalo, he is in line for a serious free fall.

Depends what is still available. If star, warmack, richardson and Cooper are gone why not.

If it's a bad team, you definitely have to consider it.

Now, do you make that trade if your top guys are still available?

Agreed. Would do it with the Jags, be hard to accept if Cooper or another high rated player was available.

If Cooper, Warmack and Richardson are gone, I'm getting that trade done!

Also, I'm assuming Star is a top 15 pick.

That is a pretty fair value trade.
It even favors Dallas a good bit if that team is Jacksonville.

Dallas' 18th for Jacksonville's 33rd and 2014 1st .

Can't do this with Cleveland, btw, because they have no 2nd rounder.

With the team really liking this draft (especially in the 2-3rd rounds) I think any trade down would be to pick up multiple pick for this year. Can't seeing them playing the roulette gamble on 2014 this year.

Fun to think about it though.

Ahh good call, I didn't know CLE doesn't have a 2nd rounder. I still think JAX is a possibility though.

If JAX can get a premier pass rusher like Dion Jordan AND a possible franchise QB, they may just go for the trade.

I would make that trade in a heart beat. Especially Jacksonville.

Go ahead and start Geno Smith and go 4-12. We will take that top 5 pick.

In his scenario we would get the other teams 2nd this year... Hence him saying we would not lose a pick (just slide down 15 or so spots)

i think he means we wouldnt lose a pick quantity wise. because we would have 2 second round picks which would still be 6 picks total and we would have that extra first next year (8 picks total)

This scenario makes very little sense to me. Think about it, if a team really valued Geno that much they would just take him with their original pick. You're telling me a team would pass on Geno and then trade this years 2nd and a 1st in what should be a much better draft class all because they HAD to draft Floyd or Jordan (2 random examples)? No player at the top of this draft class is worth making a team skip on a QB they feel like can be their franchise.

It's happened in the past. Comes down to team's individual grades on the player.
