The NFL will hold its annual supplemental draft in July, and this year's is likely to draw more attention than in the past because of Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver.

Oliver had planned to return to Georgia for his senior season, but poor grades left him academically ineligible, so he has applied for entry into the supplemental draft. The 6-foot, 205-pound Oliver likely would have been a first-day selection had he declared for April's draft, with scouts particularly impressed by his performance in the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson (2 catches, 13 yards).

As for where Oliver will be selected in the supplemental draft, if he runs a solid 40-yard dash on his scheduled Pro Day workout June 20, he likely won't last past the third round.

Teams selecting a player in the supplemental draft lose that corresponding selection in the next year's regular draft, and clubs such as Dallas and New England -- which own two first-round picks each in 2008 -- might be more inclined to pull the trigger knowing they already have an additional choice.

Players coming out of the supplemental draft in recent years have a mixed history. The Bengals are thrilled with Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks (2006 third round), who projects to be a starter and looks like a steal, while USC defensive lineman Manny Wright (2005 fifth round) was waived by the Dolphins (three games played) and had a brief offseason stint with the Bills before he was waived again.

Nebraska offensive tackle/guard Chris Patrick (6-5, 312) has also applied for inclusion in the supplemental draft.

I'm getting really concerned about corner opposite Newmann.

If Oliver runs a decent 40, I'm not sure even a 2nd will get it done. I bet some team drafting in the bottom quarter willl take a chance on this kid if he runs a good 40.

Im not. I am not blind or stupid in case your wondering.

Just simple football basics, better pass rush means the ball comes out sooner and the corners will be able to be aggressive and have the ball in front of them.

For instance,

In 2005 The cowboys defense had 86 quarterback pressures, 37 sacks.

Terrance newman had 3 int and 15 pass deflections and 70 tackles.
Anthony Henry had 3 int and 12 pass deflections and 50 tackles.

Not much different. When Henry was healthy in 05 and the team was rushing the quarterback well he was very good.

Last year we basically never had qb pressure or sacks and henry was injured again.

If henry is healthy and ellis is back to form, I believe are corners will be fine. The new scheme, the addition of spencer and hopefully a healthy ellis will make our secondary very good.

WE just drafted two CB's...and though we drafted them late, I don't see any way in the world we spend anything above a 3rd or 4th on any CB in the supplimental draft.

That is a optimistic view. Normally I am an optimistic person, but Henry has been hurt in each of the last two years and counting on Ellis to return to 100% is a bit of a stretch.

While it's obvious a better pass rush will improve the CB play, in this case we need Reeves, Jones or Brown to prove they can play in this league. If they can't perhaps we take a shot at Oliver or address that position next April. Also worth mentioning is the fact Aaron Glenn isn't a spring chick any more.

At LB the question is if but rather when Spencer takes over. I'd like to see him starting week one if he is ready. I do feel better about that position with our OLB of the future already on the team.

has Brooks really shown that much? I thought he had done very little.

Neither do I. Talk about reaching. Just because we have a extra 1st doesn't mean we use it on a 3rd round prospect.

That's a big if though, especially for such an important position. Henry will be 31 at the start of the season. Not terribly old, but it's around that age when you start getting hurt, you remain hurt.

Not saying we should spend a first on this kid either, just that I think it's such a premium position that some team will. Too bad 'cause it's my opinion that he'd be good value for us w/ a 2nd.

Thats true. And it is a big if. Everything in the nfl is a big if though.

I personally think reeves can play so I think we have 4 corners. Do I want him starting? No, but I think he is ok in odd sets and the backup nickel corner.

I am not worried about their age though, glenn is old but he was last year too, he will be fine I believe.

I also think that newman in the slot might not be something we see anymore. So glenn wont get matched up on bigger faster wr all alone outside.

Maybe I am crazy, I just think if the front 7 is what the new scheme has historically been then the secondary will be ok.

Pass on him. If we decide CB is essential then grab Antoine Cason from Arizona. Yeah, I know, I'm a homer. Watch this kid play next year when you get a chance. You'll know why.

I would spend a second on him. I think Aaron Glenn really lost a step towards the end of the season, I would like to see him be our new nickel corner.

He'll be a high first and I thought we were saving that one for McFadden...
I don't think the writer means the cowboys or NE would use their 1st rounders (though I think NE might since they seem to be determined to pull all the stops this year) just that since they have 4 first day choices they might use one of them, and I wouldn't mind if they got him with next years 3rd which will probablly be a late one anyhoot...

If a team ends up worse than the browns they could take McFadden you know and spoil all my plans.

I don't get hung up on only one draft option even though I will sing about the guy I like as much or more than anyone else on this forum.

That's about the size of it.

This isn't the NFL of the 1970's or 80's. The salary cap and the reduced draft no longer allow for teams to have incredible depth.

You just can't go goofy over positions that aren't filled with pro-bowlers.

We paid a good buck to Henry and when not injured I think the guy is good enough to ride this team into the playoffs. And if he goes down I think Glenn is good enough to start for several games.

Reeves is OK and I do like the one 7th rounder... I think that kid has real potential.

Holy cow. MacFadden this, McFadden that. He's good I admit, but is he special?

If the Brown's pick ended up being a top 3 and McFadden was still on the board, I'd trade down pick up Long and trade up w/ our own pick and select Slaton. :D

Yes, I think he is special. The second the trade was announced that we could select him was the first thought that entered my head. In truth as we got on the clock and I began to wonder if Cleveland would call, it was with the singular thought that he could be the prize.

Different skillset than Tomlinson, but this kid can run, catch, and throw the ball. His speed and talent are rare. I put him head and shoulders above Slaton and I like Slaton a lot.

If we can get him for a 2nd, do it. I'm almost tempted to say give a 1st, but I'd rather use both 1st picks to bundle to get McFadden, if need be.

Has anyone ever been taken in the Supp Draft that made the Pro Bowl?
