Georgia CB Paul Oliver ran his forty in the 4.5-4.58 range at his Pro Day, according to Scout.com. His vertical was 33.5 inches.

Oliver has size to help overcome the lack of long speed, but these numbers aren't that impressive. It's possible he'll get a look from Cover 2 teams or even as a free safety. Oliver shut down Calvin Johnson in November, but probably won't go any higher than the third round next month.

Like a rock. 3rd at best.

Maybe not even that high with those times.

So much for any ideas I had for taking a look.....

Ah, the guy had some average work out numbers, better avoid the guy like the plague... never mind how he actually looked with pads on... nevermind the guy actually played well on the field...

For fans that that throw out Emmitt being too slow, but never caught from behind... this seems fairly limited in thought...

Nah, he ran a 4.5, I don't want him... just stupid line of thinking...

I wouldn't go so far as to say I don't want him, you're right that we should be looking at his on-field performance... besides, he might have been less than 100 per cent physically when he ran yesterday...

But I will say that this 40 time would cause me to advocate using a bit lower pick on him... I was in favor of going as high as a 2nd rounder, now I couldn't justify anything higher than a 3rd rounder, if that high...

Lots of guys put up production in college, but don't have the "measurables" for the pros. You can't just look at one or the other. They have to have both if they're going to warrant a high pick. As Parcells told Ireland, you have to cut out your margin for error.

It's neat how people use the best possible case to justify their argument.

Heck why not throw out Everson Walls too since he was a slower corner who had success BUT then include Shante Carver who had slow measurables and didn't pan out.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis around 40 speed. If he had attended the combine, I am sure a speed coach could have bolstered his speed into the 4.4 or maybe even 4.3 range; it happens all the time. 4.5 speed guys reduce their speed to the 4.3-4.4 range by running on 'fast tracks' and at lower weights that they would not be playing at. Take a look at these 40 times for top CBs of today when they were coming out of college:
Asante Samuel 4th 4.51
Chris Gamle 1st 4.51
Nathan Vasher 4th 4.61
I would take any one of those CBs right now, even though their 40 times indicate that they are 'slow.' There are also a host of CBs chosen every year that run in the 4.3 range that I wouldn't dare have on the roster. Now, I'm not saying that Oliver is an All-Pro CB just waiting to be drafted, because there are also a host of 4.5 range CBs every year that do not amount to squat, but consideration should be taken when evaluating a players talent and ability on the field in comparison to what he runs in the 40.

I'm more concerned w/ his vert than I am w/ his 40.

A 40 can be affected by a number of things like track or wind, but there shouldn't be much affecting a person's vert.

I'd still use a 3rd on him though.
