Get Off TNew

He had like 3 passes caught against him for 30 some odd yards... He had a tackle for a loss and another tackle that saved a potential break away TD run. He did have 1 glaring missed tackle. SOME of you all are acting like he played badly yesterday...PLEASE. Henry played awesome but gave up way more yardage than TNew. It just appears that Henry played better because of the huge breakup he had and the INT. Yes those things are huge but don't knock TNew because he didn't have any "flashy" plays and just played solid football. Fact is we have 3 very very good CB's.

I'll take a playmaker over a solid player any day. Newman is not a playmaker, atleast not right now.

He has led the team in interceptions every year he's been in the league.

Thats not saying much considering two of last years starters aren't even in the league anymore.

Which would mean teams would be throwing away from him because the other guys sucked.

I agree about TNew...while he is a good player, he's not a "playmaker", at least not at this point in his career.

Couldn't tell that last year when Newman walked around with a bullseye on his chest for most of the season.

I don't think any team tried to avoid Newman last year.

Adam has the stats. He had about three or four games that he got lit up. Other than that he was very solid. I'm sure given the choice of Newman or one of the four guys we threw out there they'd take the sfrub.

I'm not saying that Newman sucks I'm just saying that he hasn't exactly struck fear in opposing QB's.

Eight interceptions in his first two seasons -- with very little pass rush to create bad throws -- is saying something.

Deion also had eight interceptions in his first two seasons. Ty Law and Dre Bly each had six, Rod Woodson had five, Patrick Surtain had four, Ronde Barber had two, Aaron Glenn had one. Eight compares favorably with almost every Pro Bowl cornerback in the past 10 years.

The Chargers threw Henry's was alot more than they did Newman's.

In order to see how much respect they have for a cornerback, all you have to do is see how many times they throw it his way.

Newman is respected around the league by the professionals and those in the know....

Left corner is also considered the harder position of the two since offenses tend to be right handed.

geez, what a bunch of yayhoo's

if Newman played for the Skins or Eagles everyone would be talking about how much they wish we had somebody like him

we have some of the most fickle damn fans in the league

Anyone who thinks Newman isn't good is out of their mind. What about not being a playmaker was that INT he took from Andre Johnson in the preseason. Bottom line, as someone posted above, he's had great INT numbers his first two seasons in the league, without a pass rush. The fact is, he's developing into a great corner. Whoever said we have the most fickle fans is absolutely right. If Newman played for any other team, we'd all wish we had him.

Some people have absolutely no realistic grasp of the cornerback position. They think All Pro CB's routinely have 8 INT seasons. Newman has to play up to imaginary standards that have never existed. The equivalent of what people want out of Newman would be asking Ware to have 22 sacks his rookie year, or for Julius to rush for 2,000 yards.

Right. Picks don't really tell the tale of high-end corners. A pass rush does more for that than just about anything else.

If people are posting this negative stuff after a road win over a 12-4 team when he allowed three catches for 40 yards or whatever, there's no hope, because there are going to be games where he gets beat for a lot more than that -- just like all corners.

I'm really perplexed at the disdain some people have for #41. If he really looked like he couldn't play at all, I could see it. If he were a rotten SOB who was in constant trouble with the law, I could see it. If he were a cocky attention ***** who embarrassed the team with his antics, I could see it.

But the truth is, he's none of the above.

Seriously, where does this stuff come from? Is it some kind of fantasy football influence? Is it genuinely unrealistic expectations? Is it just people who like to stir stuff up?

I don't know, but it's a strange phenomenon...

Its because of the position he plays. Again, there's not a representative statistic readily available to compare CB's, so people just make up a standard that exists nowhere but inside their own head. They believe that Deion never gave up passes in his prime (despite the fact that Michael Irvin always seemed to absue him). Nevermind the double standard that he has to play up to the best player to ever play his position to be considered worth his weight, but we don't ask Marcus Spears to be no less than Reggie White or DeMarcus Ware to be no less than LT.
