Is this real? If true than that is absolutely hilarious.

It was announced by "the" esteemed Adam Schefter on NFLN a few moments ago before they interviewed Gibbs via satellite. He did go on to say they have options where they can rework some contracts to try and bring the overage down a bit. But 23 Mil... dayum.

Money matters

Whoever takes over in Washington inherits a salary-cap situation that must be addressed.

The Commanders are in the most challenging salary-cap shape of any team in the league; they are projected to be $23 million over the cap.

It will be easy enough to slice that number in half. Tight end Chris Cooley is scheduled to count $12.2 million against Washington’s salary cap. But he has an $11 million roster bonus that can be converted to signing bonus, saving the Commanders close to $9 million in salary-cap space for next season.

Also, quarterback Mark Brunell’s contract voids, meaning that his $6.5 million salary-cap number will come off Washington’s books, though he still will count for $3 million. Still, that’s a savings of another $3.5 million.

From there, the Commanders will need to shave around $11 million more to get to the salary cap. But that’s before making a single move in free agency, or drafting a player. More salary-cap space will have to be created. It will not be easy. But this isn’t Gibbs' problem anymore. It’s his successor’s, whoever that is.

I wonder who's going to be willing to rework their contract.

They said that they can get about 9 Mil back when they convert a roster bonus and prorate it (Cooley's contract).

And Brunell saves them another 3 or 3.5 mil.

Schefter said that they'd still be 11 over....

Small price to pay for such an up and coming wild card playoff team!

They'll get it down. They won't be technically in "cap hell", but they are in a situation where the majority of the teams are far under the salary cap. So if they try to compete with another team for a FA, they are likely to be outbid or they'll pay quite a bit $$$ and the other team will say that's too ridiculous and pass.

Or they will have what happened to them last year where if any of their UFA have other teams interested in them, they'll be outbid...just like they were for Derrick Dockery's services.

Oh yeah, they have the oldest roster in the league as well, with a starting O-Line all at least 31 years old in 2008, a 35 year old Phillip Daniels, two 30+ year old linebackers, and a 34 year old Shawn Springs.

My team may have issues but the salary cap is not one of them. We have been hearing this same crap for 8 years, Chicken Little.

 Its a problem ..... maybe not enough to handicap you, but to say 21 million over the cap is not a problem is silly.

For 2006 the Commanders had to release Walt Harris because they couldn't afford him because of their cap situation. The Skins pass defense was atrocious that year and Harris went to the Pro Bowl. Then in 2007 the Skins were outbid by the Bills for Derrick Dockery's services because of the Skins cap situation. The Skins could have used Dockery given the injuries to the O-Line.

Yep, no cap problems at all.

Think about it. How many veteran players on their team WOULDN'T they cut to get under the cap, if needed?

Every year, they overpay a bunch of mediocre free agents, have a mediocre season, then cut overpaid players to get back under the cap. Then the cycle begins again. And their delusional fans think they don't have any cap problems whatsoever. I guess they haven't noticed that they have the oldest team in the NFL, their last division title came in 1999, and they haven't posted back-to-back winning seasons since 1992 because they can't afford to keep players and create any roster continuity.

23 million over the cap and nothing to show for it. That's gotta sting a little.
