I have been hard on Jerry the GM (not the owner).
I think our front office really got it right not signing Spencer to a long term contract with a big signing bonus.
We dodged a really big bullit with Spencer going down for the season, and lets face it, he may never be the same player again.
I feel bad for him, and wish him a full recovery, but glad for the Cowboys that he will be off the books the end of the year.
So props to Jerry for making the right call !!!

Don't worry. If Spencer makes the Pro Bowl with another team, there will be plenty of posters who will excoriate Jerry for letting him walk.

I would not call it "got it right", after all, they would have signed him to a big contract if they could have worked it out. They got lucky is more accurate.

why would that be since Jones said enough is enough and would not over pay Spencer? Not over paying is considered good business in the circles I run in.

Sorry but you are WAY off base

1. The cowboys wanted to sign him but he was unwilling to accept the terms offered. So he is the one who did not want to sign a long term contract not Jerry. Jerry just got lucky.

2. A good GM (you know one that would deserve props) would have had a plan in place to sign/draft someone this off season so we would never have been in a position to have to franchise spencer. You do remember that this was our second year franchising an average NFL player solely because our esteemed GM has no idea what he is doing so did not have a plan. If the plan all along was to pay spencer (a player who has average about 5-6 sacks/ year in his career) 20 million (yes, 20 million) in the last 2 years , then that was an abysmal plan .

They don't call him "almost Anthony" for no reason

Yeah , PROPS TO JERRY

With injuries there is always "luck" involved.
I can guess though that the Cowboys would have better info on a players health, work out habits ect and do factor that into
what they are willing to pay a player when considering long term deals.

Nothing like good discussion without making it personal... I so enjoy it.

Yes Bob, we can always agree to disagree in a respectful manner.
I know we are all passionate about our 'Boys, but that does not mean we can't be gentlemen about it !

How is spending 10 million on him this year a good business decision? Good decision would of been a sign and trade or just letting him walk last summer...

And didn't the Cowboys try to work out a long term deal with Spencer?

Yes the cowboys did try and work out a longterm deal.
But instead of giving in and overpaying like in the past they walked away.
They deserve credit for that, that's all I am saying.
Maybe it's a start to better front office decisions...
Let's hope for the best !

They also wanted to make sure that last season wasn't a fluke and that he could play in the 4-3 as well as seeing what they had on the roster to see if he could be replaced next season.

Sounds to me like they made exactly the right call. Even though a lot of fans wouldn't give JJ any credit no matter what he does. If he screws up, it's proof of what a lousy GM he is, if he gets it right, it's just luck.

Yes. While we're at it let's throw some love his way for not signing Nnamdi Asomugha. Pretty clever making him an offer he could refuse.

A good FO doesn't entertain either move.

To the OP.....are you suggesting the Cowboys franchised Spencer to protect themselves in the event he got hurt? That makes no sense to me. Paying someone 10m suggests you feel as if you cannot find anyone better....or you cannot live without the talent. So THEY very much want/wanted to Spencer. Just like they thought they could not live without Newman his last year....and we know how that ended. Now Newman is playing for what he is truly worth...and not what we paid him. And next year Spencer will probably play for what he is worth....and it will not be 10m.

You don't need me to tell you what most of us have KNOWN for years....Jerry is NOT a real GM. He owns the team...and because of that....he can assume any title/position on the team he wants....that is WHY he is the GM. His track record as the GM would have gotten him fired YEARS ago...even he admitted so.

Nnamdi Asomugha was one of the best DBs in the NFL the season prior to that and played at a position of extreme weakness for the Cowboys. NOBODY knew he was going to disappear after he got paid.

Yes you right... but when negotiations failed why not just let him see how much he can get in the open market.. About 5 mil a year judging by Avril's contract.. Let the market set the price..
