Good and bad decisions made this year

Remember when Jerry used the signing of Mingo as evidence for "all in"?
This is what I think of when I hear Jerry talk

Whatever anyone thinks about the 2025 off-season, it has to be better than the 2024 off-season where Jerry just sat on his hands and did nothing to make this team better. The 2025 off-season and regular season saw this FO make a lot of decisions. The hiring of a new HC, a lot of trades, a few FAs, the draft, cuts, etc.

Which decisions made by this FO were good and which ones were bad? And which decisions remain to be seen whether good or bad?

THE GOOD DECISIONS
  • Drafting G Tyler Booker. 2025 first rd pick. He’s been very good and has lots of upside. Can be a key ingredient for this OL for the next decade.
  • Drafting DE Donovan Ezeiruaku. 2025 2nd rounder. After a slow start DE has steadily improved. If he can add some more power he has great upside.
  • Signing FA RB Javonte Williams. I was wrong about this guy. He has been a true weapon with power and toughness. Can we keep him?
  • Trade for George Pickens. Acquired for a 3rd and 5th round pick. Except for the bad game in Det, Pickens has been outstanding. But…it can’t be a good trade unless the Cowboys can find a way to keep him long term at a price they can live with. This could turn into a “rent-a-player” for year if they can’t keep him.
  • Trade for Quinnen Williams. QW is a stud DT acquired for a conditional 1stand 2nd rd pick. Williams gives this team a dominant DT. Wish he were a little younger. He’s 28. But hopefully we get at least 5 more good years.
THE BAD DECISIONS
  • Dragging out the Micah Parsons negotiations. Whatever Dallas chose to do with MP, by dragging out the contract process as Jerry always does with his “stars”, it hurt the team to wait until Sept to trade their best asset. Bad decision to wait. The actual trade remains to be seen if it was good or not.
  • Trade for LB Kenneth Murray. Acquired Murray for a 6th round pick. Murray has been a disaster. And he’s the 7th highest paid player on this team. Ouch.
  • Trade for CB Kaiir Elam. Elam was acquired from Buffalo for a 5th and 7th rd pick. He was so bad, the Cowboys just cut him at midseason.
  • The decision to hire DC Matt Eberflus. As is usually the case in Dallas, the HC doesn’t get to pick his coordinators. Eberflus was a Jerry hire.
  • The Jonathan Mingo trade (yes it was 2024) The only reason I mention it is Mingo is still on this team. We gave up a 4th round pick for essentially a backup WR.
REMAINS TO BE SEEN - GOOD OR BAD
  • Hiring Brian Schottenheimer. He deserves a chance to prove himself. It’s still too early to decide. But in a league where there is no cap on what you pay coaches we hire another unproven guy to lead this team? Like Gailey, Campo, and Garrett before him. Hope he works out. We will see.
  • The Micah Parsons Trade. It was good to get two #1 picks. Kenny Clark was a nice pickup although he’s almost 30. Still depends on what we do with the remaining pick we have after acquiring Q. Williams.
  • Drafting CB Shavon Revell. 3rd rd pick has first round talent. But why must we always draft guys with serious injury history? Revell didn’t play until November. And he’s still a big ?
What do you think about all the decisions made so far this year? What did I leave out? What do you disagree with?
Spot on my brother.

Its funny that we even have to give our "GM" credit for trading for Pickens and Quinnen because other teams GMs do that stuff all the time.

And BTW, if this FO doesn't keep Pickens here, it goes down as a waste of a 3rd and 5th round pick because if they dont keep him, it means that they wasted those picks on 1 year rental when the entire league knew we had an inferior roster this season

I would put picking tyler booker under bad decisions. great RG, but man could defense used some help early on. imagine if we had Kenneth Grant and not have to make a trade for Q (although I like him), or if we had Jalen Walker, and not have to live with Murray or even walter nolen....

you never take a RG in the top 12...even top 15...the least important OL position. I don't care if he is another HOFer..... is the offense tops because of Booker or because of Pickens, CD, Javonte...and imagine you could have taken a guard in the 4th round....or God forbi sign one in FA or trade a 5th rounder for one.... the offense was pretty much the same with Bass playing....

I think that the big contract given to Brand was a mistake.

I believe that Parsons was the major influence on the team's ability to get turnovers and Diggs and Brand both benefited as a result.

When you look at INTs and fumbles that are run back for TDs, I think you will notice that in the majority of cases, the quarterback was running for his life with Parsons closing in.

Some of Parsons fellow teammates benefited by signing big free agent contracts. others benefited by resigning for huge contracts.

If Parsons had stayed and signed a huge contract, it would have been like paying two people for doing the same job.

Some of these defensive players also benefited greatly from Dan Quinn's defensive philosophy.

The large number of turnovers didn't happen until Dan Quinn came along and seemingly departed on the same bus out.

I also think it was a huge mistake not to invest more draft capital for a productive RB.

If you are going to invest that much on an offensive line to drive the offense, you should spend a little more3 to get a top rated engine. it was a good draft for RBs

Are our defensive coaches smart evaluators to know if he is?
Is it even the defensive coaches' call on who gets drafted, makes the team, free agents, etc.? To me, it seems like Jerry is making most of those decisions.

How Jerry handled MP torpedoed the season. The trade itself was OK but the timing of it put the defense behind the 8 ball. It also strings out acquisitions like Pickens and J Williams because Jerry pretty much has to sign both of them for next season to compliment the moves he made late this season.
You would think after 36 years of being the GM, Jerry would understand what all the GMs winning SBs the last three decades already understand: Your success in the regular season is largely dependent on how well you plan and work your off-season.

Just a little FYI:
The thinking is that if they don't resign Pickens they will get a 3rd round comp pick.
So he was worth a 5th round pick for the 1 year rental.
This had to be one of the best moves by this current front office, and believe you me, they have not had many.

This is what is so bewildering about Jerry.
You know he is not stupid, because of all the great business deals he does.
How can he not see he does not have the skill set to be a great GM ?
In trying to build his legacy, he has totally destroyed it.
Sad for him and all Cowboy fans for the last 30 years.
It really did not have to be this way.

It is so hard to evaluate decisions as individual choices. You have to look at the entire offseason. For example, what if they drafted Emeka Egbuka in the first round, and kept their 2 draft picks they traded for Pickens? Or What if they signed Parsons last year for $35 million and drafted a DT in the first round this year?

And who said they couldn't have traded for Quinnen Williams using their 2027 first round pick and 2026 2nd round pick, which would have nothing to do with the Parsons trade. Imagine Parsons at $35 million and Williams playing inside? I commend the Cowboys for getting Williams but they did so only after their defense looked like cow chips.

Sure Booker has been pretty good, but Tate Ratledge was available in round 2. Could they have gotten a better player to help them more in the first? I think so.

And what if they traded down and took Skattebo in the late 3rd of early 4th?

There were opportunities to make better decisions than what Dallas did. Their impulsive behavior rather than having a good solid plan they stick to is why they can't get over the hump.

I’d say you pretty well nailed it. Of course, the DC hire was so incredibly bad it may have rendered all the good meaningless, at least for 2025.

Really good post Aero.

The Micah trade is a long way from knowing what the actual outcomes will be. I like what we got, so far anyway.

The real issue will be what does this FO do with the extra draft capital? Are they capable of using it wisely to make this roster a lot better? Based on recent history, we have to hope they have learned some things. But I’m not holding my breath.
You will get your RT and DE in the first and like it Bob! ;)

From the “Remains to be seen - GOOD OR BAD department:
  • The Joe Milton III trade. He looked pretty rough in pre-season. The talent is there. The performance is yet to be seen.

Yep.. why not give him a couple of games and see if he has progressed.

Good points except the Mingo trade. On hindsight, yes not good. However the way you wrote it, for being a 4th round pick. You expected a starting WR. As you said we only got a back up WR.

What do you expect from a 4th round pick. It was a gamble either way. They could have taken a player at any position and be the same, a back up. Or not even on the 53.

Look at Tolbert. A 3rd round pick, but Flournoy a 6th round pick is far better.

The Rowdy costume should be run through a woodchipper on the day we get a new owner not named Jones. I would also fire the idiots in the black cowboy hats in the end zone lol!
Bring back Whistlin’ Ray.
