While the TV ratings were down 7% during the regular season, Ganis said the NFL actually widened the gap with other pro sports leagues and non-sports entertainment.

Other experts also said the ratings don't matter much because the league is poised for more huge TV contracts in the next couple of years. The next rounds of deals are likely to start at more than $10 billion annually and grow from there.

"So the NFL, its position as the top broadcast property in the United States actually got stronger," Ganis said. "But they don't make more money off of that. That just helps going into the negotiations for the next media deal."

Despite the declines, however, the NFL remains far and away the No. 1 programming franchise on ad-supported TV. The late Sunday afternoon games shared by CBS and Fox drew 21.59 million weekly viewers this season, almost 5 million more than the top primetime show of the fall: NBC's Sunday Night Football at just under 16.8 million, which is on pace to be the top primetime series for the 10th consecutive season.

The two early Sunday windows averaged 13.03 million and 15.35 million viewers. ESPN's Monday Night Football drew 11.75 million viewers per game, and the Thursday night package shared by Fox and NFL Network drew 11.89 million. No other primetime show has averaged that many same-day viewers this season.

The NFL is asking for more money while delivering less viewers. Disney has already said it won't happen on their end. Being at the top of a declining market isn't exactly a position of strength in negotiations.

But to say the botched decision was all on the Commish isn’t correct. The Ravens attempted to brush it under the rug.
Newsflash: The Ravens are not responsible for the well being of the NFL. That is the Commissioner's job.

It was the biggest moment of his career and he completely botched it. That is an undeniable fact.

You're ignoring the decline of broadcasting. How can you say they're getting stronger when the medium as a whole is declining?

Not at all. Their decrease has been acknowledged. But while the viewership is declining as the article stated they’re power is growing as they are distancing themselves from other live sports and programming. And as a result will demand a bigger cut.

A bigger cut of a shrinking market.

What makes you think they're distancing from other sports? Didn't see that in your articles. This article said Nascar only lost 1% of it's audience. That would mean they're closing the gap with the NFL.

Yes, a bigger cut of a shrinking market .

The league is expected to demand a 100% increase of CBS, NBC and Fox with ESPN the only network owned by Disney to push back because while there’s an overall decrease in TV viewership the NFL continues to dominate the air waves distancing themselves against other live sports and programming.

Here’s a quote from that article again,

Whuh huh? The decision was 100% Goodell’s to make. He, and he alone, dropped the ball.

It was the biggest, most high profile decision of his career. And he botched it so badly that many people - both in and out of sports - thought he should lose his job over it.

If I recall correctly it was the Ravens who swept it under the rug initially. It wasn’t until the video came out that exposed the mishandling of the situation.

No doubt the Ravens , the league and the Commish mishandled the situation. But that was early on in taking on these DV issues. That bundling of course set the stage for stricter decisions moving forward.

Yeah, that's why they extended his contract.

The NFL has been sweeping crapp like this under the rug since the start. We're entering brand new territory here, no use pretending that there is some set way to handle this.

Just because they want it, doesn't mean they'll get it.

Which shows they're not as virtuous as they would have us believe.
