I'm changing my philosophy with the Cowboys.
I've long been an advocate of drafting a quarterback. Every year. If you don't draft them, you never have a chance of developing one. Always have a young, talented arm in the pipeline so you don't get caught short like the Cowboys have this season.
But my read on the Cowboys is they lack the confidence to draft the right quarterback and develop him if and when he does get here. What other explanation could there be? Since winning their last Super Bowl, the Cowboys have selected two quarterbacks in the last 20 drafts -- Quincy Carter with a second-rounder in 2001 and Stephen McGee with a fourth-rounder in 2009.
Both washed out.
So the Cowboys have gone all in on Tony Romo since he became the starter in 2006. That's why Jerry gave him a six-year, $108 million contract in 2013 even though he was already 33 years of age. Life with Romo -- even anaging Romo -- looked a whole lot better to Jones than life without Romo. And since signing the contract, Romo has had work done on his back.
So the Cowboys are committed to Romo through the 2019 season. Then what?
I'll tell you what.
