Versus some unnamed future draft pick I would take Stafford in a heart beat.

Well there's some merit to that.

The over-riding thought is that "whomever" the Cowboys draft is going to be THE guy and we know how that can go.

I cannot remember the type of offense they ran, but this guy is a very intelligent QB, he is 6:5 a good arm and he knows where to go with the ball and he will take what the defense is giving. He wants to be a GM once he is done playing football. His Coach is Mark Whipple who has been in the NFL with the Steelers, Browns, Eagles all as the QB coach, he was instrumental in the development o Big Ben. He also had a stint in the USFL.
He has this young man on point.

Mark Whipple runs a pro-style offense. Apparently this guy Frohnapfel is currently in the 2nd year of his graduate studies (business administration, 3.8 GPA), was a backup at Marshall his first 2 years playing, so last year was his first as a starter in college (and this will be his last season playing for UMass).

The very definition of rawness and potential. I'd take a flyer on him after the draft in 2016.

To me it would be settling at the most important position on the field. He's not elite. He may not even be a top 10 QB, but we know what he is. We know he can play.

Seems more like a Cincinnati Bengals way of thinking more than the Dallas Cowboys.

But...if Jerry and his fat son are doing the picking, yeah...I'd probably be for this trade.

I think there is a very good chance Detroit parts ways with him in the offseason.

At the right price which is the key here, I think he would be a suitable backup here.

Sounds good to me, although there could very well be some overlap here that could get ugly. Tony will be 38 in 2018, the same age Tom Brady is right now.

In any case, I think we need to draft a QB or two before then; we might get lucky and find a starter, and it could prevent us from having to dumpster-dive for a backup.

You just ruined the whole thread.
He is so much more than a backup in this league.

Why would he come to sit for 2-3 years and make almost nothing compared to starting somewhere and making 15m+?

I agree. The problem is I'm sure there are some teams that will take him as a starter.

I think he is more than a backup in this league, but I don't see what team is going to hand their franchise to him to start. In my mind you want one of two things as a franchise, a veteran QB that you believe in or a rookie (contract) quarterback who you believe in.

I don't think he is either of these things.

I don't know. I'm at the very least intrigued. But alas, it won't happen.

Watching this guy lose 3 in a row the way he did makes just about any 1st or 2nd string QB in the NFL intriguing . . . . . . .

This is assuming detroit would let him go?
The jones boys do prefer veterans so who knows.

I do not know that Stafford is the next qb after romo in a couple of years but I agree with gosselin. the jones family do not have the confidence in drafting a qb high in the draft and letting him learn. I also believe that we need to think ahead and see who the next veteran qbs that are going to be available in the next couple of years that will be the qb for this team. life after romo is going to be painful with what we are playing at qb now is a preview of what is ahead for us.

I actually like this.

The quarterbacks coming out in the draft these days are complete junk. They know nothing about reading defenses or going through progressions. They're useless for five years.

Seriously.

I'll never get the folks that insist on drafting a QB every year just to do it.

Look at how many kids play QB at the college level each year. Then look at how many get drafted. Then look at how many of those are ever worth a damn on an NFL field. It's staggering. You can draft a QB every year just like I can buy a lottery ticket each week.

Every year, we have what, 3-5 "elite" QB's in the league, a handful of others that are considered "franchise" QB's, a few that are middle of the road types, then the remaining 16-20 teams are trotting out some guy they know they don't really have a shot at winning a SB with. But it's the best they've got.

It's hard to predict what any team will look like next year, let alone a couple of years from now. But I'm certainly not offended by the premise of the article in the OP. Especially considering it's a bye week and we can only speculate about Dez's foot so much.

backup no way at Stafford age someone like the browns or Texans would make Stafford there starter right now and be very happy with him.he will not a accept a backup role for any team. I am not a big Stafford fan but he is better then half the starters in nfl right now.

Very few college football teams run pro style offenses. This has become a huge problem because they are no longer producing pro QB's, and to a lesser extent, pro OL. There are not many QBs available in the draft, the top ones would most likely be 2nd or 3rd rounder 10 years ago. Unless the Cowboys are drafting very high on the draft, they have no shot at he few pro QBs available. So maybe try should dog the rest of season to have a shot at Goff or Shaw....

Browns drafted their guy and it didn't work out. This isn't a midseason type thing. They'll go draft another qb next year, but they don't want stafford.

I don't think Stafford is much better than Tannehill.
