I just got hired by a company to teach English to kids in China via teleconference. It's pretty cool because the money is good and I can work from home. I won't have to move to China. However, I've been pulling out my hair over tech hurdles. I was to register on their web page, but it just would not work. I tried on three different computers at home with two different operating systems (Windows and Kubuntu Linux). I also tried at the local library on their machines and it would not work. Finally, they fixed the problem and I was able to log in and get my account set up.
In a set up page, they wanted me to upload scans of my diplomas and a photo of me, which I did. However, the high-res photo and the small video introduction file would not upload, so I sent it to them via e-mail. Now here's where it gets bizarre. There's a spot for a scan of my passport and fields for my banking information so that they can pay me via remote. That should be fine as long as that information is secure. However, in fixing their tech problem, they reset my password to something super generic, something anyone could guess. I therefore went in there and searched and searched for a "change password" option and could not find it. Before the login page there is a "reset password" option, and I thought, "Cool, this must be it." Not so. When I did that, it simply e-mailed me the same generic, easy-to-guess password. Ain't no way I'm putting in that sensitive info until I have an extremely secure password. What's frustrating is I had one until they reset it. Now there seems to be no way to change it. I've been through all the pages.
They gave me today as a deadline to put in all my info, but no way am I putting in bank and passport info without an excellent password. I sent them a polite and professional e-mail with my reasons for not putting the info in yet. I just had to rant somewhere. This has been frustrating. Last month someone stole over 800 dollars from my checking account, so I'm extra careful. The fraud department at my bank said that crooks set up scanners in places like gas station pay-at-the-pump stations and in stores themselves; then they sell that info online. I've already been really picky and careful about using passwords online that no one will ever figure out. Now I'm picky about where I use my debit or credit cards. I pay for stuff in cash more now than I used too.
Anyway, here's hoping this works out and they're understanding about my concerns. If they're not, I just won't work for them, and that would be a bummer because I've been excited about this cool opportunity.
