If you wanted a starter today you wanted to try and trade to 2 or 3 to draft McFadden. Now that that statement is out of the way.

I think we had a very good day.

Felix is a pick that makes a lot of sense. He actually fits into what we want out of a back to pair with Barber. Mendenhall may end up being a better player, but I'm not sure he would be better for us during the length of a rookie contract.

Jenkins was a major bonus. Trading a 5th and a 7th to make sure we get him was a great move. There is a very small chance our 5th or 7th would have made the team.

Bennett was just a simple value pick. I don't think we traded Fasano with the idea of picking up a TE early in the draft. I think we just saw someone we thought wouldn't be there, and no player at a need position rated any where close to him and took the player.

This is a really good post my man

You really summed up what I think happened.

I do fear we have a Steven Jackson-Julius Jones bit of a redux here. Mendenhall will go on to be a Pro Bowler, while we'll be sitting around justifying Felix Jones as the better pick because he plays a solid role here. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Not sure if Mendenhall will be a pro bowler anytime soon with Willie Parker still there.

Oh well, at least the Mavs won on Friday....

It's a bit different, Steven Jackson was the clear-cut best running back in the draft and Julius Jones was picked some 30 picks after that. It came down to the fact that they thought Felix was a better player at the same value pick

Or at least that they thought that Felix was the better fit for the team.

I like our picks. I was pretty upset when we passed on Mendenhal, but after listening to Jerry, Wade and all the media gurus, I'm o.k. with it.

To me the success of this draft is going to be did we get players that can do what our coaches want? Will our coaches correctly use the players we took? Will they design plays to take advantage of our picks' strengths?

If so, it will be a great draft. If not, it will be another loser...

We got 3 1st round type talents.

Bennett is a talented player. He's pretty much a reciever at TE. So I consider him more of a WR. He needs to get better but he's a much better version of Fasano as a receiver. Unlike Fasano, Bennett doesn't really block at all. He's a tall guy that's really athletic and can catch the ball although at other times he can't.

Felix Jones is a really good back. Lots of speed can help in the return game. He's a good counter to Marion Barber. Mendenhall would be nice but we already have a Mendenhall his name is Marion Barber and he's one of the better backs in the NFL already. If Mendenhall is drafted by Dallas he's playing less than Felix Jones will play. We didn't want to draft a back better than Barber because there may not be a back in this draft as good as Barber and that includes McFadden.

Mike Jenkins could end up a great pick at corner. He's a top 10 type talent. He may start this year at corner. If PacMan Jones doesn't work out.

So take CJ at 28, or something else.

Felix Jones is not the missing piece to the puzzle that is the Dallas Cowboys. We could have gone this draft without him.
OK....so who was the mythical missing piece for the Cowboys that was available in this draft?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Jones and Bennett picks. It's not that I don't like the players, it's because there were players on the board that I would have loved to see play with a star on their helmet.

I was amazed that a RB with top 10 talent was available at 22. It was just too good to be true...and what does ol' Jerruh do? He passes on Steven Jackson and drafts Julius Jones...again! I'm not saying Felix is gonna suck like Julius but when I think Felix Jones I think of a good kick returner and most likely a career complimentary back...like Jerious Norwood. When I think Rashard Mendenhall however, I think of an elite, pro bowl back. One that can easily carry the load should the starter go down for an extended period of time. You don't draft role players and complementary backs in the first round when an elite player at the same position is still available. Dont get me wrong, I like Jones and would have gladly taken him had Mendenhall not been there. But the fact is, Mendenhall was available, so I'm only reluctantly taking Jones.

I absolutely love the Jenkins pick. He was my second favorite CB behind McLovin.

Now to the Bennett pick. I like Bennett, I really do....just not for the Cowboys. We didn't really have a position that we HAD to address at 61 other than WR. But there weren't any viable options at WR so going the BPA route is completely understandable. Only Bennett wasn't the BPA...at least in my opinion. The best player available was Dan Connor. He's a Zach Thomas clone who's an absolutely ideal replacement for him when he retires. Plus he comes from Linebacker U. And what about Reggie Smith? That's a first round safety sitting there at the end of the second round. Both players were better options than another back up TE when we have Curtis and Hannah already in the fold.

So in summation, I certainly would have done things differently. However, I can't argue with the talent that we got. Three players ranked in the top 50? That's impressive. I think all three will help the team quite a bit next year. I'll probably get over the fact that we passed on a few of my pet cats as soon as I see the new guys in action in training camp...as will all of you, I'm sure. Because even though they weren't necessarily my top choices, they certainly aren't bad players.

I give it a B+

I'd say a B. Except for WR, we're addressing our needs. Hopfully on day 2, we'll take care of that.
