Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Jones and Bennett picks. It's not that I don't like the players, it's because there were players on the board that I would have loved to see play with a star on their helmet.
I was amazed that a RB with top 10 talent was available at 22. It was just too good to be true...and what does ol' Jerruh do? He passes on Steven Jackson and drafts Julius Jones...again! I'm not saying Felix is gonna suck like Julius but when I think Felix Jones I think of a good kick returner and most likely a career complimentary back...like Jerious Norwood. When I think Rashard Mendenhall however, I think of an elite, pro bowl back. One that can easily carry the load should the starter go down for an extended period of time. You don't draft role players and complementary backs in the first round when an elite player at the same position is still available. Dont get me wrong, I like Jones and would have gladly taken him had Mendenhall not been there. But the fact is, Mendenhall was available, so I'm only reluctantly taking Jones.
I absolutely love the Jenkins pick. He was my second favorite CB behind McLovin.
Now to the Bennett pick. I like Bennett, I really do....just not for the Cowboys. We didn't really have a position that we HAD to address at 61 other than WR. But there weren't any viable options at WR so going the BPA route is completely understandable. Only Bennett wasn't the BPA...at least in my opinion. The best player available was Dan Connor. He's a Zach Thomas clone who's an absolutely ideal replacement for him when he retires. Plus he comes from Linebacker U. And what about Reggie Smith? That's a first round safety sitting there at the end of the second round. Both players were better options than another back up TE when we have Curtis and Hannah already in the fold.
So in summation, I certainly would have done things differently. However, I can't argue with the talent that we got. Three players ranked in the top 50? That's impressive. I think all three will help the team quite a bit next year. I'll probably get over the fact that we passed on a few of my pet cats as soon as I see the new guys in action in training camp...as will all of you, I'm sure. Because even though they weren't necessarily my top choices, they certainly aren't bad players.
I give it a B+
