People are putting too much stock in reported visits. It was just a few short years ago we traded our top two picks to move up for a player we didn't visit with.

Yes, but there was no reason to visit with a prospect who your staff deems the best CB since Deion. Otherwise, we almost always attend a Pro Day or have the player visit, even down to the lower round choices. Some teams are transparent that way.

Lord help us if our front office looks at our DT depth chart and goes "yeah, we're good".

If so, it is more of the Marinelli Magic Wand effect, where they believe he can just work wonders with the likes of Josh Brent, Terrell McClain and Nick Hayden.

Jarrett is one of my original pet cats. Like him quite bit & have for some time. But it just doesn't seem that they're interested in many DT's at all.

IIRC, it was reported that Cowboys played nearly 66% of their defensive snaps in the nickel or sub-packages in 2014. With Hardy, Lawrence, a potential draft pick, Gardner, ect. at DE...I think Mincey might see more time on the interior in 2015. It wasn't always an option in 2014, because of the injuries to DE's Spencer, Lawrence, Gardner, Edwards, etc.

From a 2014 ESPN article:

"Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli still believes Mincey can be a threat on third downs, just at a different position. Mincey will often slide inside to defensive tackle in Dallas’ nickel and dime packages."

“He’s got some real quickness inside as a rusher,” Marinelli said. “He’s got quickness, maybe not long speed. And real smart.”

"The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Mincey has played end and tackle throughout his eight-year career. Many of Mincey’s 20 sacks, with a high of eight in 2011, have come as an interior rusher."

“I’ve always been a good inside rusher,” Mincey said. “That’s what’s kept me around the league for a while."

The Boys 2015 DL could be similar to the Bears 2012 DL.

2012 Bears DL (and sacks totaled):
LDE: Idonije/Wootton (7 sacks each), DT: Melton (6 sacks), DT: Paea (2.5 sacks), RDE: Peppers (11.5 sacks) ... Idonije also played on the interior

2015 Boys potential DL:
LDE: Lawrence/Mincey/Gardner, DT: Crawford, DT: Brent, RDE: Hardy ... similar to Idonije, Mincey could play both DE & DT

Jarrett will be an excellent addition, hopefully he is on their draft board, I really like his ability to push the pocket.

I like the player but I think it's become pretty apparent that we aren't looking at any DT's in this draft....at least definitely not in the early rounds

The team has not shown the interest for drafting a DT early, but some of these posters refuse to believe it.

Marinelli has lost me. I have trouble believing in a coach that keeps Hayden around as a starter. I know Hayden is supposed to be a high effort guy, but at some point he needs to have the talent to play the position. IIRC he was rated as one of the five worst starters at his position, but his cool nickname has to count for something.

I like Jarrett, but let's not forget we have Chris Whaley from Texas coming off a "medical redshirt" year. Similar player with similar talent. May be a reason we feel good about backup 3 tech.

I get why you want worker bees and try hard lunchpail types, but that player should be at the bottom of the depth chart, not at the very top.

Wait, so Whaley is like another draft pick? Hot dog. Between him and Gardner, we will take over the NFL.

Hes a beast plain and simple. An absolute steal. 2nd best Defensive lineman in the draft when all said and done.

That is soooo 2014 offseason...

After what Marinelli did with the defense in 2014, nobody should be wondering if he will get the players to play above their heads.

I really, really like Jarrett. He is an ideal fit for this scheme and plays with the effort and intensity that Marinelli demands.

I hope they get a shot to take him.

So we just continue to tap the powers of the wand?

How about making things easier?

The problem with smoke and mirrors/spit and bailing wire--it eventually falls apart.

I'm pretty sure they're trying to improve the defense.

It's all good though... I'm just having a little fun with ya!

I have no doubt they will devote more resources to the defense.

The question becomes where. If they go the secondary route thinking that Marinelli's DL specialty will bridge the gap, that is a mistake.
